The latest production at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick An Old-Fashioned Family Murder by Tony Award winner Joe DiPietro and directed by Larry Raben runs this through this weekend November 2.
The show features a star-studded cast including two-Emmy and Golden Globe award winner Sally Struthers.
WBGO's Doug Doyle spoke with two of Struther's co-stars in An Old-Fashioned Family Murder, veteran Broadway, movie and television actor Tony Carlin who plays “Arthur Whittington” in this GSP production and Tony Award nominee Caitlin Kinnunen who plays "Dotty Claythorne".
On a dark and stormy night, a once-grand estate becomes the stage for a chilling crime in this razor-sharp comic mystery from Tony® Award winner Joe DiPietro. When a pompous writer spills a family secret—tensions turn to murder and every guest is a suspect. A sharp-eyed widow, a smooth-talking fiancé, a jealous daughter—no one is who they seem, and everyone has something to hide. Secrets unravel, betrayals come to light, and Mrs. Peck’s motherly instincts might just outmatch the detective’s.
Carlin says the ensemble show has been a lot of fun.
"I didn't realize how funny it was until the audience started reacting. I also didn't realize what a joy this group of people is until we really got into it. Add to that, this is a murder-mystery which is always delicious, all the twists and turns and laughs. It kind of has it all."
For Caitlin Kinnenum, sharing the stage with Sally Struthers has been delightful.
"It's incredible. She truly is iconic. I think all generations know and love Sally Struthers. She is one of the kindest human beings you will ever meet. To be on stage with her and get to experience the audience just eating her up and laughing at every second of her performance truly brings a smile to my face. I love her."
Kinnunen was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in Broadway's hit The Prom, a musical she says has changed her life in so many ways.
Kinnunnen, Carlin and Struthers and joined by fellow cast members Allison Scagliotti, James Taylor Odom and Michael Evan Williams in An Old-Fashioned Family Murder.
Tony Carlin, whose parents were both actors (Frances Sternhagen and Thomas A. Carlin), stresses this amazing cast that has the timing on stage necessary ti pull of a challenging ensemble show.
"Everybody has it in spades."
Carlin and Kinnenun, who both had roles in the hit Broadway show Spring Awakening, say they really enjoy the regional theater and community theater experience.
