The Academy Award for Best Picture in 1948 went to Gentleman’s Agreement, which starred Gregory Peck as a magazine writer who exposed antisemitism in New York City and the Connecticut suburbs. In December 1948 the film’s producer, Darryl Zanuck, was honored at an event where a who’s who of famous entertainers performed. The last act of the evening was the comedy team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, who were unknown in Hollywood.
