Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey opens its new (375 McCarter Highway in Newark) this Saturday, April 12.
Natasha Hemmings, CEO of Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey, joins WBGO's Doug Doyle to talk about why the center is important for girls in Newark and beyond.
"The Girl Scout Leadership Center is bigger than just a space for girls. It is a space for the community. It is a vibrant hub and it's going to serve as a premiere space for leadership development. Here we are going to be doing community engagement and lots of innovative programming for Girl Scouts and the broader community."

Hemmings is the first African American woman in the council’s history to lead the organization.
"I'm very proud and ever prouder when girls who look like me come up to me in the supermarket or out in the street and say 'You're Natasha, talk to us about Girl Scouting, tell me more about why you volunteered and why you work for Girl Scouts."
Natasha has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Non-Profit Leadership from Rutgers University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Theater from Trenton State College, and earned Executive Non-Profit Leadership and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Certificates from Fairleigh Dickinson and Cornell University.

There’s a community festival this Saturday, April 12, from 11am-3pm (Rain or Shine.)
