Phil Murphy Wins NJ Governor's Race

Democrat Phil Murphy will be the next governor of New Jersey, after defeating Republican Kim Guadagno in the race to replace Chris Christie.

In his victory speech, Murphy told his supporters says the days of division are over and as New Jersey’s next governor he’ll work to rebuild the state.

“It won’t be easy and it certainly won’t be overnight. But let there be no doubt. Starting here, starting now, and starting with us, New Jersey is coming back.”

Murphy says his first task will be living up to his campaign promise to build a stronger and fairer economy.

“That means a higher minimum wage, equal pay for equal work, tax fairness, and the real property tax relief that our middle class and seniors so desperately need.”

Murphy also pledges to fund womens’ health and make communities safer with sensible gun safety laws and comprehensive criminal justice reform.

He says his administration will oppose President Trump with steeled spines.

“This is one of the first major elections since Donald Trump was elected. Tonight New Jersey sent an unmistakable message to the entire nation: we are better than this.”

Conceding to her democratic opponent, Republican Kim Guadagno thanked her base of supporters and says her defeat doesn’t mean their message is lost on New Jersey.

“Never forget what we were fighting for here. We were fighting for our families and we will continue that fight for lower taxes and a safer New Jersey.  This is not the end, this is the beginning of a good fight and we will keep up that fight.”

Republican Governor Chris Christie’s low approval rating, as showed in recent polling, likely played a part in his deputy’s failed gubernatorial bid.
