Branford Marsalis Drops By Morning Jazz to Discuss His New Album and His Endless Tour

Eric Ryan Anderson

Branford Marsalis has a skillset pulled from his life’s work as a touring jazz musician. He also has the luxury of a working band of 20 years, whose collective personnel — Marsalis, pianist Joey Calderrazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner — can go places that others just can’t.

Their new album, The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul, which OKeh will release on March 1, is a joyful declaration of this reality. And ahead of a sold-out appearance on Wednesday night at Jazz Standard in New York, Branford dropped by Morning Jazz to chat about the band, the record, and the state of this music we call jazz.

The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul is out on March 1; preorder here.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
