Markus Rutz (Rutz Music Works Trio)
Trumpeter and composer Markus Rutz brings a melodious pen to his original compositions and plays with a tone that has been called gorgeous. For this trio performance at The SoapBox Gallery he leads the trio along with Amina Figarova and Keala Kaumeheiwa in the band and ready to present music representing standards, original music and tunes from an album that is scheduled for release in early 2023.
Markus released two volumes of Blueprints on Origin Records from his last studio recording project along with Chicago contemporaries and guest saxophonist Brice Winston. This project organically evolved into his most recent project as Composer-in-Residence for The Rose Theatre based out of Washington DC. The collaboration features music arrangement and performances on monthly episodes of The Rose Rhapsody.
Pianist Amina Figarova is in the band for this engagement. Amina is an Azerbaijani jazz pianist. Trained as a classical pianist in Baku, she became interested in the local folk music, later specializing in jazz. Since the late 1980s, together with her husband, the flutist Bart Platteau, she has performed in jazz festivals around the world.
Keala Kaumeheiwa is bassist contributing his pulse and groove to round out the ensemble. Keala is active on the Boston scene. His formal music education took him from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied both jazz and classical music with renowned bassist Richard Davis to New York City, where he performed with the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Keala later also studied with legendary bassist Ron Carter as part of the inaugural class of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at New England Conservatory.
Bobby Sanabria Multiverse Big Band
Jazzmobile's mission is to present, preserve, promote and propagate America's classical music, Jazz. This summer, Jazzmobile presents native Nuyorican drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, and activist Bobby Sanabria and his 21-piece multi-Grammy nominated Multiverse Big Band.
This performance will combine elements of Jazz, funk, and R & B, as well as Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Puerto Rican rhythms and more into what Fernando Gonzalez of JazzTimes has described as "... a musical juggernaut." Ben Ratliff of The New York Times says "... Mr. Sanabria expands the possibilities, moving the sound of bands like that of Puente, Machito, with all the heft and intricacy and clave-based dance rhythm, into the harmonically oriented sophistication of current New York jazz players. It's New York up and down, and back and forth across the last century, from the street to the mambo palaces to the conservatories."
Cory Henry
Simply put, Brooklyn-born singer, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and all-around keyboard master Cory Henry is the future of music. A GRAMMY winner with his old band Snarky Puppy, he’s since made a name for himself as a solo artist and producer earning four GRAMMY nominations including Kanye West (Donda), Erik Bellinger (New Light) and his own self-produced album (Something to Say). Henry has also gone on to lay his vocals, instrumentals and production skills to recent releases from global superstars Rosalía, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Imagine Dragons and more. With a DJ set from Soho Radio’s Rustam Ospanoff, spanning the deepest soul sounds from around the world.

Aaron Diehl and Orrin Evans
Pianist and composer Aaron Diehl mystifies listeners with his layered artistry. At once temporal and ethereal, his expression transforms the piano into an orchestral vessel in the spirit of beloved predecessors Ahmad Jamal, Erroll Garner and Jelly Roll Morton. Following three critically-acclaimed leader albums on Mack Avenue Records — and live appearances at historic venues from Jazz at Lincoln Center and The Village Vanguard to New York Philharmonic and the Philharmonie de Paris — the American Pianist Association’s 2011 Cole Porter fellow now focuses his attention on what it means to be present within himself. His forthcoming solo record promises an expansion of that exploration in a setting at once unbound and intimate. "Diehl has developed an organic, sophisticated approach" says DownBeat.
During his kaleidoscopic quarter-century as a professional jazz musician, pianist Orrin Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who pushes the envelope in all directions. Never supported by a major label, Evans has ascended to top-of-the-pyramid stature on his instrument, as affirmed by his #1-ranking as “Rising Star Pianist” in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll. Grammy nominations for the Smoke Sessions albums The Intangible Between and Presence, by Evans’ raucous, risk-friendly Captain Black Big Band, stamp his bona fides as a bandleader and composer. In addition to CBBB, Evans’ multifarious leader and collaborative projects include the Eubanks Evans Experience (a duo with eminent guitarist Kevin Eubanks); the Brazilian unit Terreno Comum; Evans’ working trio with bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Mark Whitfield, Jr.; and Tar Baby (a collective trio of 20 years standing with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits). One of Tar Baby’s two 2022 releases will be released on Evans’ imprint, Imani Records, which he founded in 2001 and relaunched in 2018.
