  • Drom NYC Summer Jazz Series: Live Jazz Returns to the East Village, Beginning July 28th As New York's live music scene comes roaring back to life, East Village venue Drom brings live jazz back to the neighborhood with their new NYC Summer Jazz Series: Nine shows over two separate weeks in July and August, featuring some of the city's most dynamic performers, running from July 28th to August 22nd (Full lineup below). While such storied jazz venues as Tonic and The Stone are long gone from the neighborhood, and other beloved rooms like The Pyramid Club went permanently dark during the pandemic, Drom keeps the flame of live music burning, and celebrates the end of our collective lockdown by going big. • Tony Woods Project Formed in the mid-90s, the Tony Woods Project has recorded four highly-acclaimed albums of original folk/jazz/rock/world-inspired compositions: High Seas (1997), Lowlands (2004) Wind Shadows (2009) and Hidden Fires (2017)Whilst happily shifting gear between jigs and reels, Balkan dances, atmospheric ballads and ambient electronics, Tony Woods jazz connections also play their part in his compositions, where Latin, African, funk and rock grooves come to the fore. The emphasis, both in the compositions and the improvisations, is always on lyrical melody. The highly distinctive sound of this long-standing band, comes courtesy of Rob Millett's glowing, Gary Burton-esque vibraphone, Mike Outram's superlative, angular chord work, Andy Hamill's rock-steady bass, Milo Fell's percussive prowess, as well as the leader's inimitable, virtuosic and expressive musical story-telling on saxophones, alto clarinet, wood flute and whistle. Hailed as one of the most influential and popular musicians in modern music, trumpeter Louis Armstrong (1901-71) rose out of poverty in New Orleans and became the Prometheus of jazz*. Growing up in the Crescent City, Armstrong heard music from the Caribbean — especially Cuba — and was greatly influenced by the exceptional Cuban trumpeter Manuel Pérez. Armstrong’s own recorded version of the then-popular Cuban song "El Manisero (The Peanut Vendor)” would cement that Jazz/Latin connection.

Multi-Grammy Nominated Bobby Sanabria MULTIVERSE Big Band will honor the unique connections that New Orleans and Louis Armstrong have to Latin music in this special FREE CONCERT FOR KIDS. The band will rhythmically retrace the African footprints of Latin jazz, from The Big Apple to the Big Easy, and back to Armstrong, who lived much of his adult years in Queens, New York.

  • The push for a federal Martin Luther King Jr. holiday began almost immediately after Dr. King’s assassination in April 1968, when the late Representative John Conyers introduced the first motion to make King’s birthday a federal holiday. Yet it would take another 11 years for the proposal to reach the floor of the House of Representatives for a vote in 1979. When the bill fell just five votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass, it was music that helped galvanize the nation.
