Piano Jazz Series: Luis Perdomo
“A rather amazing improviser, the pianist is making a name for himself by feverishly assaulting the progressive edge of mainstream jazz.” — Village Voice
Acclaimed Venezuelan jazz pianist Luis Perdomo brings his trio to Zinc on Tuesday, November 22 for a splendid evening of jazz piano. He's supported by Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Adam Cruz on drums.
Ever since he came to New York in 1993 from Venezuela, Perdomo has emerged as one of the most in-demand sidemen—as evidenced by his celebrated work with a wide array of jazz and Latin stars—from Ravi Coltrane to Ray Barretto, and by his six critically acclaimed recordings as a leader. The release of his magnificent new, Hot Tone label debut CD, 22, features bassist Mimi Jones’ supple, deep bass lines and drummer Rudy Royston’s quicksilver rhythms, in a trio he christened The Controlling Ear Unit. “I wanted to create an environment where a sensitive player could make his own musical choices, without fear of the consequences,” Perdomo says. “The word ‘unit’ is appropriate because although the current group is a trio, it doesn’t really have to be restrained to that. It could have a different format, depending on what the music calls for.”
Showtimes are at 7:00 PM and 8:30 pm. Tickets: $30 advance / $35 day of show. For more info, visit http://zincjazzcom.
Guitar Masters Series: Andy Bianco ft. Wayne Escoffery
Acclaimed jazz guitarist Andy Bianco brings his formidable quartet to Zinc on Monday, September 19. He’s supported by saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, organist Brad Whiteley, and drummer Paul Wells.
New York City-based guitarist/composer Andy Bianco has performed/recorded with Angie Stone, Ray Chew, Onree Gill, Kandace Springs, Elle Varner, Bob Moses & many others at such renowned venues as Smoke Jazz Club, Cafe Wha, The Bitter End, The Blue Note, SOB’s, and Joe’s Pub. He’s also the guitarist for the Grammy-nominated R&B artist Elle Varner, with whom he has completed a tour of Japan for Billboard Live. He was a finalist in the 2012 & 2015 USA Songwriting Competition, & his 2 official album releases as a leader have received domestic & international critical acclaim. Andy completed a 6-month tour of New Zealand & Japan as the guitarist with the critically acclaimed stage production entitled, “Empire.” He is a member of the jazz hip-hop supergroup, the Nickel & Dime OPS.
Showtimes are at 7:00 pm & 8:30 pm. Tickets: $25 in advance / $30 at the door. For more info, visit https://www.zincjazz.com.
Guitar Masters Series: Sheryl Bailey
“A sizzling guitar goddess.” —All About Jazz
Acclaimed guitarist Sheryl Bailey brings her group to Zinc on Monday, December 19. She's supported by pianist Miki Hiyama, bassist Jennifer Vincent and drummer Luciana Padmore.
There’s no description more apt for Sheryl Bailey than “A sizzling guitar goddess”, coined by Elliot Simon of All About Jazz. He’s not alone with his superlatives-Adam Levy of Guitar Player Magazine calls Sheryl “One of the most compelling tones of her generation”, and Frank Forte of Just Jazz Guitar ranks her “among the best bop guitar players with a fresh approach and something new.”
Sheryl’s playing is unquestionably “sizzling”. She has groomed incredible chops and impeccable taste with which she applies them. It’s said (by Lee Metcalf, The Villager) that she can “go from zero to blazing in two beats”, but she is continually praised for never sacrificing melody and lyricism for technique. “She balances superior technical skills with a strong lyrical sense and swinging touch…” continues Metcalf, and Joe Taylor of Soundstage says “Bailey combines an astonishing command of the fingerboard with a seemingly endless flow of melodic invention.”
Showtimes are at 7:00 pm & 8:30 pm. Tickets: $25 in advance /$30 at the door. For more info, visit https://www.zincjazz.com.
Piano Jazz Series: David Hazeltine
“David Hazeltine is for sure the brightest star on the jazz piano horizon. His style has a deep-seated commitment to jazz history while communicating a wealth of ‘today’ ideas.” —Cedar Walton
Acclaimed jazz pianist David Hazeltine brings his formidable trio to Zinc on Tuesday, August 23. He’s supported by Neal Miner on bass and Pete Van Nostrand on drums.
David Hazeltine is one of a handful of contemporary pianists who has mastered all the major musical skills, from improvisation and technique to accompaniment, arranging, and composition. Even more impressive, David is the rare artist able to innovate in each category. Thus, it’s no surprise that he’s the most recorded contemporary jazz pianist of our time, having recorded thirty-five CDs as a leader and hundreds more as a sideman, on various major labels globally. A Milwaukee native, David was playing the clubs as a preteen, and before he’d even come of age, he was already grabbing the attention and respect of jazz legends like Sonny Stitt and Chet Baker. They urged him to make the move to New York City, which he did in 1992.
Showtimes are at 7:00 PM and 8:30 pm. Tickets: $25 advance / $30 day of show. For more info, call (212) 477-9462 or visit http://zincjazzcom.
Piano Jazz Series: Ted Rosenthal
“There aren't many modern jazz pianists more dexterous than Mr. Rosenthal.” —The New York Times
Acclaimed jazz pianist Ted Rosenthal brings his trio to the Zinc Bar for a splendid evening of jazz piano on Tuesday, January 31. He's supported by bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington.
Ted Rosenthal is one of the leading jazz pianist/composers of his generation. He actively tours worldwide with his trio, as a soloist, and has performed with many jazz greats, including Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and James Moody.
Winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, Rosenthal has released fifteen CDs as a leader. Rhapsody in Gershwin, which features his arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue for a jazz trio, reached #1 in jazz album sales on iTunes and Amazon. Wonderland, was selected as a New York Times holiday pick, and received much critical praise: “Sleek, chic and elegant” – Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune. Impromptu, showcases his reimaginings of classical themes for jazz trio.
Showtimes are at 7:00 pm & 8:30 pm. Tickets: $30 in advance / $35 at the door. For more info, visit https://www.zincjazz.com.
