Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, he currently divides his time between teaching in N.Y. and performing with world renowned jazz artists at home and abroad. Berkman has performed with numerous jazz luminaries including: Sonny Stitt, Tom Harrell, Brian Blade, the Vanguard Orchestra, Cecil McBee, Dave Douglas and Chris Potter. His 11 recordings as a leader have appeared on numerous “Critic’s Best” lists. Berkman is a tenured professor at the Aaron Copland School of Music, C.U.N.Y. in New York and has published three books on jazz with Sher Music Publishing which are used in jazz schools worldwide. This appealing saxophonist, composer, and bandleader who hails from Central New York, is known for his beautiful alto and powerful tenor sounds. Rick began playing sax at the age of four and after college spent a decade as a working musician in the jazz clubs of New York City. Rick went on to electrify audiences throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean for more than three decades. Now, as a veteran musician, he leads the Rick Alberico Jazz Project bringing together a selection of top musicians on a project-by-project basis to showcase their talents and his rich musical skills. As a sideman, Reed frequently works with bass vibraphonist Warren Wolf, trumpeter Sean Jones, and bass clarinetist Todd Marcus. Jeff has also performed with a slew of musicians over the years including Gary Thomas, Miguel Zenon, David Sanchez, Dave Kikoski, Dave Liebmann, Tom Scott, Jeff Coffin, Bennie Maupin, Kirk Whalum, Take 6, and Tom Morello to name a few. Each week will focus on a single quartet and will begin with a discussion with hugely inspiring experts, performers, composers and musicologists who have unique and personal relationships to Bartók’s String Quartets. The second day is an open rehearsal of the week’s quartet, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at the Tesla’s working process. Each week will culminate with the Tesla Quartet’s live-stream performance of Bartók’s work, followed by a Q&A with our subscribers, viewable to anyone watching the performance. Paul and Bob recorded a DC together back in 1997 called "Windows" in trio with the late Mike Smith on drums.
