A weekend of concerts and educational opportunities that celebrate the breadth and depth of solo jazz piano for music-lovers who want to dig deep into the piano’s unique capacity to convey a broad range of sounds, textures and rich harmonic options. This instrument gives artists an unparalleled medium to express feelings, concepts and emotions through its unmatched versatility. The VJC is offering the Festival by donation. Tickets are valued at $95 for the weekend or $20 per concert. The 2 Each one-week intensive sessions immerses students in the art of jazz performance and helps them become well-rounded musicians through masterclasses, workshops, ensemble performances and jam sessions with professional musicians.   • New Jersey’s Bad Boy is back! Jersey City native Mike Marino returns to NJPAC with a more hysterical stand-up about the Italian-American experience. Inspired by his family’s heritage and the absurdities of modern life, Mike’s riotous comedy has taken him from The Tonight Show to sitcoms to major comedy clubs, theaters, and casinos from New York to Los Angeles, and around the world. Mike’s video “If the President Were Italian” hit 12 million+ views on YouTube. He’s also been a highlight of Montreal’s famed Just for Laughs Comedy Festival for seven years in a row. In 2008, Marino was inducted into the New Jersey Comedy Hall of Fame, and in 2015 he was awarded the USO Bob Hope Comedy Award for his regular performances for the U.S. military.

Ross Snyder) Join the Tesla Quartet on an exciting journey through the six monumental string quartets of Béla Bartók as the Quartet embarks on its first performance of the complete cycle. For the Tesla Quartet’s six week Bartók-fest we will explore how this music sways our innermost passions, to a depth and at a pace designed to entertain, inform, and engage our listeners. Each week will focus on a single quartet and will begin with a discussion with hugely inspiring experts, performers, composers and musicologists who have unique and personal relationships to Bartók’s String Quartets. The second day is an open rehearsal of the week’s quartet, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at the Tesla’s working process. Each week will culminate with the Tesla Quartet’s live-stream performance of Bartók’s work, followed by a Q&A with our subscribers, viewable to anyone watching the performance.

For Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, composer/arranger Jihye Lee brings her first, all-female, Korean jazz quintet to Flushing Town Hall to perform an elegy for victims of anti-Asian hate crimes, including a special dedication to the women of the recent tragedy in Atlanta, GA. Lee will present her original compositions as well as arrangements of well-known songs.
