  • Critically acclaimed composer, pianist, and educator Adegoke Steve Colson, will be a main attraction at this year’s HSA A-Train Arts Festival to be held on June 8-11th. Ade, as he prefers to be called, will premiere a new composition that he has titled “Suite Harlem,” on the last day of the festival (June 11). This ode to the historic community of Harlem is arranged in six parts (Searching Harlem, Harlem Streets, Our Beautiful Children, The True Bridge, Resilience, and A Gift, A Legacy), and pays tribute to Harlem’s rich cultural past, present and future, while honoring the Harlem School of the Arts, a nationally recognized arts institution, its student body, creative staff, and its founder the legendary Dorothy Maynor’s vision. This is the culmination of Ade’s partnership with HSA, which began with Mr. Colson being one of a select group of artists recipients of South Arts prestigious Jazz Road Creative Residencies, a 4-year national jazz initiative funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
  • John Yao and His 17-piece Instrument (JY-17 for short) is the long-standing passion project of trombonist and composer John Yao featuring his original compositions and arrangements which explore the boundaries of harmony, color, texture and rhythm. The 17-piece ensemble is comprised of New York City’s finest jazz musicians including members of Grammy- award winning ensembles such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, both of which Yao has been a regular substitute for many years. Yao’s compositions and arrangements are post-bop, experimental and aim to explore new sounds for big band. “At times angular and broken, other times linear and swinging, he offers a broad view of the possibilities of jazz composition,” says Jim McNeely of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Downbeat says, "[Flip-Flop] showcased Yao's unpredictable compositions and inventive arrangements, which spring from tradition while pointing toward future portals." For this performance, the JY-17 will perform selections from the Beyond Suite and music from their album "Flip-Flop".
