  • The Kansas City pianist's big band eventually became the Count Basie Orchestra, and his ensemble's style came to represent his hometown's sound. The blogger and the Boss Lady have a listen to his 1932 classic.
  • Grammy Award winning jazz pianist Brad Mehldau has recorded and performed extensively since the early 1990s. Mehldau’s most consistent output over the years has taken place in the trio format. Starting in 1996, his group released a series of five records on Warner Bros. entitled The Art of the Trio (recently re-packaged and re-released as a 5-Disc box set by Nonesuch in late 2011). During that same period, Mehldau also released a solo piano recording entitled Elegiac Cycle, and a record called Places that included both solo piano and trio songs. Elegiac Cycle and Places might be called “concept” albums made up exclusively of original material with central themes that hover over the compositions. Other Mehldau recordings include Largo, a collaborative effort with the innovative musician and producer Jon Brion, and Anything Goes—a trio outing with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy.

  • “Gregory Stephen Ionman Tate (1957-2021), was an amazing son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, nephew, cousin – a family man in the deepest African sense. A proud Harlem resident, he was also an invaluable friend, a generous mentor to many, and a gentle giant of Black radical thought and creativity. Please join us for this major celebration of Greg’s life and works.”

Burnt Sugar/Danz was founded in 2002 by writer/musician/conductor Greg Tate and dancer/choreographer/filmmaker Gabri Christa as a radical melding of Christa’s profound relationship to movement and Tate’s equally rigorous approach to music. The collaboration they formed was rooted in the work of Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber, the sprawling band of virtuosos that Tate founded and co-led – a multi-generational ensemble inspired by Butch Morris’ CONDUCTION system for improvising orchestras. Burnt Sugar/Danz, which made its debut at SummerStage in Central Park that same year, draws upon the cream of the crop in New York City’s music, choreographic, and dance-performance talent to create innovative, never-before-seen works, live, and in real time. Adopting Morris’ baton gestures and hand-sign vocabulary to dance, Burnt Sugar/Danz presents an alchemical blend of spontaneously composed music and choreography. This 20th-anniversary celebration, held in tribute to Tate, includes guest appearances by Harriet Tubman, the avant power trio known for its deep fusion of soul, rock, and jazz; the Resistance Revival Chorus, a collective of more than 60 women and non-binary singers; the Bardo Steppers, a deep-funk second-line procession of drums and horns led by bassist Melvin Gibbs; and DJ Reborn, a trailblazing international DJ, sound collage artist, and arts educator, also the resident DJ for Ms. Lauryn Hill’s world tour and the founder of DJs for Justice.
  • The band that reminds the world that it's cool to swing, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is the perfect choice to set the vibe for Fox's first Chasing Rainbows Gala of the 2021-2020 Season! Unless you've been lucky enough to see Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington or Cab Calloway in person, you probably have not seen swing music played with such fervor, precision or, most importantly, perfection. The band's vibrant fusion of classic American jazz, swing, and dixieland has energized the Fox stage and romanced Fox fans many times. If you missed them before, now is your chance! Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's all original core line-up includes Scotty Morris (lead vocals and guitar), Kurt Sodergren (drums), Dirk Shumaker (double bass and vocals), Andy Rowley (baritone saxophone and vocals), Glen "The Kid" Marhevka (trumpet), Karl Hunter (saxophones and clarinet) and Joshua Levy (piano and arranger). Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's efforts to promote and revitalize swing music have taken shape as much more than a simple tribute. Taking inspiration from the creators of this uniquely American art form, the band's original horn-infused music and legendary high-energy show introduces the genre to a new and younger generation while remaining cognizant and respectful of the music's rich legacy. The group's first phase of stardom featured an appearance in the 1996 indie film Swingers, a movie that not only launched the careers of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, but introduced Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to an audience beyond their Los Angeles base. The band's music has appeared in countless films and television shows, including The Wild, Despicable Me, Phineas and Ferb, Friends, Third Rock From The Sun, Ally McBeal, and So You Think You Can Dance. They have appeared live on Dancing With The Stars, Late Night With Conan O'Brien, NBC's Christmas in Rockefeller Center, The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a remarkable seven appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and the Super Bowl XXXIII Halftime Show. The band has also appeared as special guests with many of the country's most distinguished symphony orchestras, and has performed for three U.S. Presidents.
  • HOLLA & HEAL: A live concert event featuring Magnetic North & Taiyo Na (MNTN) and special guests Ann One, Sham-e-Ali Nayeem, and Treya Lam with proceeds to benefit the community organization CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities. This collective brings live musicianship to the genres of soul, folk, jazz and hip hop from a distinct and politicized Asian American perspective. The event aspires to be a safe gathering for communal healing, especially in context of the pandemic and spikes in anti-Asian violence. Magnetic North & Taiyo Na consists of Theresa "T-Vu" Vu, Derek Kan, Taiyo Na, and Chucky Kim. They created Home:Word, an album of chart-topping hits in Japan and Korea that Phil Yu of AngryAsianMan called “one of my favorite albums of the year," and writer/historian Jeff Chang described as “an album my family plays when we get together.” In 2021, they released “We Belong ‘21” in response to increased nationwide anti-Asian violence. A dedication to the late photographer Corky Lee, the music video was directed by An Rong Xu with ZZ Design.
