  • This Valentine’s week for 8 performances Feb 10-14, Melissa Errico returns to Birdland Jazz (315 W.44th St) with the Tedd Firth Quintet, featuring Russ Malone on guitar to offer a seductive suite of Noir songs inspired by her new album Out Of The Dark: The Film Noir Project. From "Angel Eyes" to "The Man That Got Away,” celebrate with Melissa the sexy, swinging music of voluptuous fatalism & doomed love, of smoky nightclubs & half-lit hotel rooms — “A Noir Romance” luxuriates in the darkness the reminds us of the light that love can bring. Performances are Feb 10-12 at 7pm & 9:30pm, Feb 13-14 at 8:30pm.
  • Samir LanGus is a Grammy Award-nominated gnawa musician, born and raised in the city of Ait Melloule, Morocco whose passion for music stems from the variety of street sounds of his home city. Currently based in NYC, LanGus adds his own contemporary spin to the traditional spiritual trance music, mixing jazz instrumentation and North African tradition with New York attitude. Omar Aena is of Iraqi descent and is a DJ, community organizer, and event producer based in NYC. He is the founder of Dance Lab, a Brooklyn-based collective that explores dance as a form of somatic healing. Omar Aena mixes traditional world music and electronic sounds, with a focus on middle-eastern music.
  • Calvin Johnson is a saxophonist and composer from a multi-generational New Orleans music family who loves to spread the exuberance of New Orleans music around the world with his band Calvin Johnson & Native Son. A trendsetter and student of history, Johnson performs in the space between Funk, R&B, and popular music while staying true to his jazz roots. Downbeat Magazine called his latest album, Notes of a Native Son, one of the Best Albums of 2022. It's no wonder Johnson has performed with the greats, including Irma Thomas, Harry Connick Jr., Aaron Neville, Jason Derulo, Blind Boys of Alabama, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Mannie Fresh, Mystikal, Irvin Mayfield, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Veronica Swift that's been transcribed and covered by artists around the world. Finishing 3rd in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition and being voted #5 Rising Star Male Jazz Vocalist in the most recent Downbeat Critics Poll proves Benack's chops as a crooner are just as viable as his trumpet playing, making him the rare true double threat. Whether it's leading his weekly jam session residency at Smalls Jazz Club in NYC, performing piano trio at the Cafe Carlyle, or touring domestically and internationally headlining clubs and festivals,"BB3" is one of the most in-demand entertainers in Jazz music today.

  • Donald Vega was trained classically in piano in his native Nicaragua. He emigrated to the United States at age 14 and found a musical home with the Colburn School of Performing Arts (CSPA). He began his studies there in classical piano with Teresa de Jong Pombo and Dr. Louis Lepley. Vega began learning the language of jazz from mentor Billy Higgins at The World Stage and continued at CSPA with Jeffrey Lavner, then later with bassist John Clayton at the University of Southern California. He went on to graduate from Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School where he studied with piano great Kenny Barron. Vega currently performs internationally as the pianist for world renowned bassist Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio with whom he has recorded several albums. Mr. Vega is also a professor at The Juilliard School and sits on the board of BackCountry Jazz, a non-profit organization which provides music education programs and performances to underprivileged youth.

    Vega’s debut album, Tomorrows, was released in 2008 to rave reviews. In his sophomore album, Spiritual Nature (Resonance Records, 2012), he was joined by the regal rhythm tandem of bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash. Vega teamed up again with Lewis Nash on his third album, With Respect to Monty, (Resonance Records, 2015) along with Hassan Shakur, the great bassist and former Monty Alexander band member, and long time friend and grammy nominated artist, Anthony Wilson on guitar.

    New York saxophonist Daniel Bennett has been hailed as one of the most original and unpredictable musical voices of his generation. The Daniel Bennett Group is celebrating the release of their 9th studio album, 'New York Nerve.' The Boston Globe described Bennett's music as, "a mix of Jazz, Folk and Minimalism." The music shifts rapidly from Jazz Fusion to American Folk Music. The band recently played their London album release at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. Daniel Bennett is joined by master percussionist Koko Bermejo (drums/keyboard) and acclaimed bassist Kevin Hailey. Daniel Bennett has been featured in Timeout New York, Baltimore Sun, Miami Herald, Boston Globe, and NPR. The UK Jazz Journal called Bennett "an outspoken voice of hope" during the COVID 19 pandemic. Daniel Bennett Group was recently voted 'Best New Jazz' in Hot House Magazine. Daniel Bennett is a touring woodwind clinician and associate director of the New York Jazz Academy in Times Square. The Daniel Bennett Group tours extensively, performing at major clubs and festivals. The band was recently featured on NPR's 'Here and Now.' Daniel Bennett is also an active musician in the NYC theater scene. Bennett orchestrated the music for 'Whitman at the Whitney,' a multimedia theater production at the Whitney Museum. Daniel Bennett played woodwinds in 'Blank! The Musical,' the first fully improvised musical to launch on a national stage. The New York Times called the show, "Witty, Likable and Ludicrous!" Daniel Bennett's theatrical works have strongly shaped his eclectic sound and musical storytelling as a bandleader. Daniel Bennett's genre-bending sound has captivated audiences throughout the world.
