This week’s musical act is the Alicyn Yaffee Trio, who is one of the next generation of talented and inspired young jazz musicians to come out of Northern California. Now based in New York City, Alicyn’s debut album, “Someone Else,” features all original songs that exude the pensive intensity and lushness of artists like Alanis Morissette and Joni Mitchell.

Alicyn is a rare bird among young guitar players. She has a soulful style, emphasizing tone and feel over flashy technique, while at the same time possessing considerable harmonic knowledge and a good deal of prowess on the fretboard.

Acclaimed jazz guitarist Jack Wilkins brings his formidable trio to Zinc jazz club on Monday, March 13. He’s supported by Jeff Barone on guitar, Sean Smith on bass, and Steve Fidyk on drums.

Guitarist Jack Wilkins has been on the International jazz scene since the early 1970s. His flawless technique and imaginative chordal approach have inspired collaborations with Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan, Bob Brookmeyer, and Buddy Rich, among many others. A native of Brooklyn, Jack began playing guitar at age thirteen. His mentors included Johnny Smith, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Bill Evans, Clifford Brown, and Freddie Hubbard.

In 2013 Sam was selected as a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. As a semifinalist, Sam performed at The Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. for Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis, Bobby Watson and Jane Ira Bloom. Most notably, Sam has performed at Carnegie Hall, Jazz @ Lincolin Center, Symphony Space Birdland, The Iridium, Yoshi’s Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club, The 55 Bar, The Zinc Bar, The Kitano Hotel, Cornelia Street Cafe and live on WBGO 88.3 FM. Acclaimed Venezuelan jazz pianist Silvano Monasterios brings his trio to Zinc on Tuesday, February 28 for a splendid evening of jazz piano. He's supported by bassist Ricky Rodriguez and drummer Jimmy Macbride.

Pianist-composer Silvano Monasterios was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He spent his formative years of training at the Jose Angel Lamas Conservatory while he alternately encountered the great American jazz tradition in all its diversity. He promptly began his professional career at the age of 18, combining these influences by performing and recording with some of the most prominent Venezuelan artists of the time.

In 1989, Silvano traveled to Miami, Florida, to participate in the Miami Jazz Festival, where he received a “Best Soloist Award.” By 1990, he had immigrated to the United States to make use of a scholarship from Miami-Dade College. More recognition followed with another “Outstanding Soloist Award” at the University of Colorado in 1991 and then a music scholarship from the University of Miami, from which he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1995. In 1998, Silvano was voted “New Artist of the Year” at the Hennessey Cognac Jazz Search in New York City, which led to a slot at the Playboy Jazz Festival where he engendered many new friends and fans. This year also marked the release of his first CD, “Roads Not Taken”, prompting more critical interest in the U.S. and Latin America.

This series presents a world-premiere work commissioned by Voices of the New, paired with a selection of old and new works chosen by the members of the ensemble. Performed on an intimate scale mostly without a conductor, this series will offer audiences a chance to connect directly with the ensemble.

An unsung hero of the acoustic piano, Alan Broadbent is a highly lyrical and melodic bebopper/post-bopper who has cited Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Tommy Flanagan, Nat “King” Cole, and Red Garland as some of his favorite pianists. Raised in New Zealand, he moved to Boston in 1966 to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. After staying on the road with Woody Herman (for whom he was a writer, arranger, and soloist) from 1969 to 1972, he settled in Los Angeles. Broadbent went on to work as a sideman for Chet Baker, tenor saxmen Warne Marsh and Gary Foster, and the late singer Irene Kral in the ’70s, and with Bud Shank and arranger Nelson Riddle in the ’80s.

The 1990s found him writing arrangements for Natalie Cole, Marian McPartland, Scott Hamilton, and others and playing alongside bassist Charlie Haden, tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts, and drummer Larance Marable in Haden’s Quartet West – a unique and conceptual L.A.-based group that is known for including bits of dialogue from film-noir movies between bop performances.

The stunning Rachel Z and her piano trio have audiences captivated from the moment they hit their seats. With recording and performing credits, including Peter Gabriel, Al Di Meola, Wayne Shorter, Steps Ahead, and Stanley Clarke, Rachel’s magnificent and exquisite song poems are beautiful and demanding.

Manhattan-born and raised Rachel Nicolazzo (aka Rachel Z) had music practically ingrained in her genetic code. Groomed to follow in her mother’s operatic footsteps, she began voice lessons at two, started classical piano lessons at seven, and attended the opera by age nine. “Then I heard Miles Smiles.”

Listening to Herbie Hancock’s harmonies over Wayne Shorter’s compositions helped her bridge the gap from her classical training to jazz. Rachel Z graduated from the New England Conservatory with a “Distinction in Performance” award.

This week’s musical act is the Noriko Ueda Duo, who is originally from Hyogo, Japan. Her interest in music began early in her life, studying classical piano at the age of 4. At 16, she began playing the electric bass. At age 18, she began her career with the upright bass. After she graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston where she majored in Jazz Composition, she relocated to NYC.

Noriko has performed at many historical jazz venues include “Carnegie Hall”, “Blue Note New York”, “Jazz at Lincoln Center – Dizzy’s Club”, “Kennedy Center”, “Hollywood Ball”and “Birdland”.

Noriko is a member of “ARTEMIS” lead by Renee Rosnes. Toured in Europe several times, and had a sold out concert at Carnegie Hall, and the Debut album “ARTEMIS” was released from BLUE NOTE RECORDS. (2020) She has toured in Japan with Ted Rosenthal Trio 13 times (2006 – 2019), and our CD “Out of this World” which reached #1 on the national jazz radio charts. (2011)

Her first leader Trio album “DEBUT” has released from the Japanese record company “Terashima Records”. (2015)

She performed at Blue Note New York several times with her leading band, “Noriko Ueda Trio”, Quartet and her big band “Noriko Ueda Jazz Orchestra”, also as a featured artist. (2002 – 2018)

She has played with “The DIVA Jazz Orchestra” also “Five Play” over 15 years and performed for many projects including the collaboration with Johnny Mandel (2010), and recording the music track for Macy’s July 4th fire works event which was broadcast on NBC, included a big band piece she arranged. (2014).

She is the winner of the Charlie Parker Jazz composition Prize founded by Broadcast Music Inc for her original big band piece “Castle in the North”. (2002)

She also has performed with various groups including the legendary musicians, Frank Wess, Kenny Barron, Grady Tate, Nancy Wilson and Bill Charlap.
