Shunzo Ohno:Metamorphosis
Shunzo Ohno is recognized as one of the most influential trumpeters and composers in jazz. His recordings are known for their tender and fearless optimism. Ohno’s performances and recordings with Gil Evans, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock have influenced his current works, with trail-blazing tones honoring Japanese traditional music. His award-winning albums and compositions received acclaimed global recognition, in addition to two Grammy Award-winning albums, ISC Grand Prize, John Lennon SWC, and much more.
His life story of resilience and riveting live performances are compelling and energizing. In pursuit of global harmony through music, he claims, “We all are Dreamers, and together, we are all triumphant.” Live at Joe’s Pub, Shunzo Ohno’s Metamorphosis performance is the premiere of his new works, with his distinguished Jazz Collective Ensemble and the Lotus Chamber Music Collective, performing innovative and favorite compositions.
Pete Malinverni + Juliet Kurtzman: Candlelight Quartet
PETE MALINVERNI / JULIET KURTZMAN CANDLELIGHT QUARTET play music from their acclaimed new recording, “Candlelight - Love in the Time of Cholera”, inspired by the great novel of that name by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez. Spotlighting music of the Americas, from Tangos to Ragtime to Jazz, this program calls to mind an earlier age, when Romance was to be sought, and Love was known to conquer all. Stereophile said their newest recording …“is more a juxtaposition than a blend. Kurtzman portrays melodies in a violin sound of surpassing purity. Malinverni creates spontaneous embellishments and rhythmic sparks and displacements that could only come from a jazz musician. He takes infrequent, vivid solos. On “Oblivion”, he follows Kurtzman’s haunting portrayal of Astor Piazzolla’s theme with an improvised new corollary of that theme, also haunting". Downbeat said the recording …“showcases exquisite melodic lines from both instrumentalists, as well as brilliant bouts of dialog. Malinverni, who cites Piazzolla as a key influence, has teamed with Kurtzman to craft an album that has a degree of the irresistible, heart-piercing emotive quality of his hero’s finest works".

About The Vision Festival
Founded in 1996, the Vision Festival is New York City's longest continuously running jazz festival. Now in its 26th year, this festival of music, dance, poetry, and visual art is heralded as “one of New York’s most essential art events” (New York Times). Performances feature legendary and emerging stars representing the free jazz, experimental, and avant-garde communities and include Lifetime Achievement honorees like Amina Claudine Myers, Andrew Cyrille, Dave Burrell, Peter Brötzmann, and Milford Graves. This year, we honor Wadada Leo Smith and Oliver Lake.

Red Baraat
Red Baraat is a pioneering band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by dhol player Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound, a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra with elements of hip-hop, jazz and raw punk energy. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve. But even as it’s clear that Red Baraat has built a startling history of performances in iconic settings, the band’s bread and butter remains the sweaty clubs, festivals, packed performing arts centers, and college auditoriums that keeps the band on the road all over the world the last several years. It’s here where Red Baraat does what it does best – communing with their audience in a joyful, near hedonistic celebration of music and dance, which tellingly, draws a crowd even more diverse than the players on stage. The universality of what Red Baraat does is undeniable. And this is no happy accident. It is the product of intention and design. Says Jain, “The band…our songs…are addressing the multiplicity of viewpoints,” says Jain. “There’s ‘Zindabad,’ which means ‘Long Live’ in Hindi. In that song, we’re saying that we celebrate life, we celebrate devotion — but we also celebrate agitation and revolution. If we can unite people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to partake in the exuberance of life through the universal language of music, then life is that much sweeter.”
Brass Queens with Sauce City at Mercury Lounge
This is Brass Queens' New Orleans Send-Off Show! Before they embark on a 4 show run in New Orleans next month, the 8-piece brass band will take the Stage at Mercury Lounge on January 24, 2023 to perform their traveling show.
The ensemble's sound is deeply inspired by the music of New Orleans mixed with the flair of modern pop. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, the Brass Queens features an all-female horn section with the goal of expanding the space for women in a male-dominated industry. Brass Queens has performed at the 2021 Met Gala, on Good Morning America, multiple appearances at Governor's Ball Music Festival and Exit Zero Jazz Festival, Chanel No. 5’s 125th anniversary, and for notable clients including Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co., Perrier, Instagram, New Balance, and many more.
Sauce City provides tasty grooves out of NYC.
Lincoln Center Summer for the City Presents Second Moon
Originally created as a side project by the prolific music arrangers Park Jin-woo and Kim Hyun-bo, Second Moon first came to prominence as one of South Korea's best known folk pop bands through their catchy and remarkably popular Korean television soundtracks, including the scores for The Legend of the Blue Sea and Love in the Moonlight. The group have since expanded into a touring ensemble whose performances draw inspiration from ethnic folk songs sourced from around the world, including Korean pansori, Irish traditional, American country western and bluegrass, Romani jazz manouche, and Chinese opera. This program is part of Lincoln Center's continuing celebration of the spectrum of Korean performing arts, presented in collaboration with Korean Cultural Center New York.
This event is free and open to the public. Seating and entry are first-come, first-served; the line will form at the Atrium’s entrance on Broadway, between 62nd and 63rd Street.
