New Camerata Opera (NCO) announces details for a double bill of French one-act operas - Lili Boulanger's Faust et Hélène and Maurice Ravel's L'heure espagnole - from September 16 through September 24, 2022 at 8pm at Irondale Center, 85 South Oxford Street, Brooklyn, NY. Tickets are $25 mezzanine, $45 general admission, and $80 VIP and are available for purchase at newcamerataopera.org/double-bill.

For the first time ever, New Camerata Opera brings its unique blend of immersive and fun performances to Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Music Director Kamal Khan and Stage Director John de los Santos conjure a gorgeous world in which clockwork photography by NYC-based artist Atom Moore creates a striking backdrop to this timeless story.

This double bill is part of the company's groundbreaking 7th season that breaks boundaries by bringing classic stories to the stage and re-contextualizing them for today's audience. New Camerata Opera will exceed its pre-pandemic levels with four mainstage productions along with pop-up concerts presented at locations throughout New York City's five boroughs. The organization also remains committed to creating video operas for audiences of all ages, worldwide.

Faust et Hélène
Boulanger was a contemporary of Ravel's, and his influences can be heard in this piece that won her the Prix de Rome composition prize at the age of 19. With just three voices, this rarely-staged work offers a generous glimpse into the genius of Boulanger's compositional skill and deserves to be featured more frequently in the operatic canon. Taken from Goethe's retelling of the story of Faust, Boulanger's opera focuses on the moment when Faust is persuaded by Méphistophélès to sign over his soul to eternal damnation in return for being shown one moment of true happiness. The theme of time connects the two operas in this double bill and provides a framework for Moore's unique displays.

L'heure espagnole
First performed in Paris in 1911, L'heure espagnole is set in a clock shop in central Spain. It follows the fortunes of Torquemada, the hardworking clockmaker, as his young wife Concepción negotiates her way through her collection of ridiculous lovers. Ravel's music is bursting with hummable melodies, lively habanera dances, and other Spanish folk song elements that will defy audience's preconceived notions of opera.

Acclaimed jazz pianist David Hazeltine brings his formidable trio to Zinc on Tuesday, August 23. He’s supported by Neal Miner on bass and Pete Van Nostrand on drums.

David Hazeltine is one of a handful of contemporary pianists who has mastered all the major musical skills, from improvisation and technique to accompaniment, arranging, and composition. Even more impressive, David is the rare artist able to innovate in each category. Thus, it’s no surprise that he’s the most recorded contemporary jazz pianist of our time, having recorded thirty-five CDs as a leader and hundreds more as a sideman, on various major labels globally. A Milwaukee native, David was playing the clubs as a preteen, and before he’d even come of age, he was already grabbing the attention and respect of jazz legends like Sonny Stitt and Chet Baker. They urged him to make the move to New York City, which he did in 1992.

Acclaimed jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur returns to Zinc on Monday, August 29. He's supported by bassist Harvie S and drummer Vince Cherico.

Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator, renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism, and ability to charm peers, students, and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist, Ben-Hur keeps the flame alive and pure, burning in every note… He’s a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.” Roni — born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen, based in the New York City area — has recorded a dozen-plus albums as leader or co-leader, with The New York Times praising his “crisp, fluid style” and Time Out New York calling him “a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist.” He has developed a rare facility in both straight-ahead jazz and samba/bossa-nova styles, underscored by his work with masters in each field, from bebop piano sage Barry Harris and winds ace Frank Wess to beloved Brazilian vocalist Leny Andrade and composer Marcos Valle.

Acclaimed jazz pianist Edsel Gómez brings his formidable trio to Zinc on Tuesday, August 30. He’s supported by Rubén Rodríguez on bass and Robby Ameen on drums.

Grammy nominee Edsel Gómez is today one of the premier Latin pianists in the world. His highly personal approach to fusing jazz, Latin, and Brazilian music gives him a unique personality and musical voice. His record Cubist Music pioneered an original improvisational concept based on Cubist Art. He arranged and directed Dee Dee Bridgewater’s Grammy-winning Eleanora Fagan: To Billie with Love. He has worked with many more luminaries, including Don Byron, Celia Cruz, Gary Burton, Olga Guillot, Jack DeJohnette, and Caetano Veloso!

Acclaimed jazz pianist Manuel Valera brings his formidable trio to Zinc for a splendid evening of jazz piano on Tuesday, September 6. He’s supported by Hamish Smith on bass and Mark Whitfield Jr. on drums.

Based in New York City, Grammy-nominated artist, pianist, and composer Manuel Valera was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Since arriving in NYC, he has become well known in the NYC modern jazz scene, garnering national reviews and lending his talents as a pianist and composer to such notable artists as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Brian Lynch, Dafnis Prieto, Jeff “Tain” Watts, John Benitez, Samuel Torres, Joel Frahm, Yosvany Terry among many others.

Valera is also the leader of his working band Manuel Valera and the New Cuban Express, a project deeply influenced by the experiments of Cuban artists from the 70s and 80s. While inspired by artists Irakere, Emiliano Salvador, and AfroCuba, this touring band creates a unique and distinctive style that mixes elements of Jazz, R&B, fusion, and funk with Cuban music styles. Expectativas (MAVO 2013) is the follow-up and seventh recording as a leader to his 2013 Grammy-nominated New Cuban Express (MAVO 2012) which was up for Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year.

His critically acclaimed debut cd in 2004 Forma Nueva (MAVO) features John Patitucci, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez Bill Stewart, and Seamus Blake. Historia (Fresh Sounds New Talent 2005), a jazz quartet with Antonio Sanchez, Seamus Blake, and Ben Street. His third release, Melancolia (MAVO 2006)—employs a string quartet incorporating world rhythms and classical concepts in the jazz idiom. Vientos (Anzic 2007), representing a new working quartet, features bassist James Genus, drummer Ernesto Simpson, saxophonist Joel Frahm, and a woodwind quartet. His fifth trio recording Currents (MaxJazz 2009) features Ernesto Simpson and James Genus.

In addition, he has been awarded several grants for composition, most notably Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works and the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award. Manuel has traveled the world performing in over 30 countries at some of the biggest international venues and festivals.

Acclaimed jazz guitarist Ben Monder brings his trio to perform at Zinc on Friday, September 9. He’s supported by Chris Lightcap on bass and Anthony Pinciotti on drums.

A musician in the New York City area for over 30 years, Ben Monder has performed with a wide variety of artists, including Jack McDuff, Marc Johnson, Lee Konitz, Billy Childs, Andrew Cyrille, George Garzone, Paul Motian, Maria Schneider, and Marshall Crenshaw. He also contributed guitar parts to the last David Bowie album, “Blackstar”. Ben conducts clinics and workshops around the world and has served on the faculties of the New England Conservatory, NYU, and the New School. He was the recipient of a Doris Duke Impact Award in 2014, and a Shifting Foundation grant in 2013. Ben continues to perform original music internationally in solo and trio settings, and in a long-standing duo project with vocalist Theo Bleckmann. He has appeared on over 200 CDs as a sideman and has released 6 as a leader: Amorphae (ECM, 2015), Hydra (Sunnyside, 2013), Oceana (Sunnyside, 2005), Excavation (Arabesque, 2000), Dust (Arabesque, 1997), and Flux (Songlines,1995).
