Acclaimed jazz pianist Manuel Valera brings his formidable trio to Zinc for a splendid evening of jazz piano on Tuesday, September 6. He’s supported by Hamish Smith on bass and Mark Whitfield Jr. on drums.

Based in New York City, Grammy-nominated artist, pianist, and composer Manuel Valera was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Since arriving in NYC, he has become well known in the NYC modern jazz scene, garnering national reviews and lending his talents as a pianist and composer to such notable artists as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Brian Lynch, Dafnis Prieto, Jeff “Tain” Watts, John Benitez, Samuel Torres, Joel Frahm, Yosvany Terry among many others.

Valera is also the leader of his working band Manuel Valera and the New Cuban Express, a project deeply influenced by the experiments of Cuban artists from the 70s and 80s. While inspired by artists Irakere, Emiliano Salvador, and AfroCuba, this touring band creates a unique and distinctive style that mixes elements of Jazz, R&B, fusion, and funk with Cuban music styles. Expectativas (MAVO 2013) is the follow-up and seventh recording as a leader to his 2013 Grammy-nominated New Cuban Express (MAVO 2012) which was up for Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year.

His critically acclaimed debut cd in 2004 Forma Nueva (MAVO) features John Patitucci, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez Bill Stewart, and Seamus Blake. Historia (Fresh Sounds New Talent 2005), a jazz quartet with Antonio Sanchez, Seamus Blake, and Ben Street. His third release, Melancolia (MAVO 2006)—employs a string quartet incorporating world rhythms and classical concepts in the jazz idiom. Vientos (Anzic 2007), representing a new working quartet, features bassist James Genus, drummer Ernesto Simpson, saxophonist Joel Frahm, and a woodwind quartet. His fifth trio recording Currents (MaxJazz 2009) features Ernesto Simpson and James Genus.

In addition, he has been awarded several grants for composition, most notably Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works and the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award. Manuel has traveled the world performing in over 30 countries at some of the biggest international venues and festivals.

Acclaimed jazz guitarist Ben Monder brings his trio to perform at Zinc on Friday, September 9. He’s supported by Chris Lightcap on bass and Anthony Pinciotti on drums.

A musician in the New York City area for over 30 years, Ben Monder has performed with a wide variety of artists, including Jack McDuff, Marc Johnson, Lee Konitz, Billy Childs, Andrew Cyrille, George Garzone, Paul Motian, Maria Schneider, and Marshall Crenshaw. He also contributed guitar parts to the last David Bowie album, “Blackstar”. Ben conducts clinics and workshops around the world and has served on the faculties of the New England Conservatory, NYU, and the New School. He was the recipient of a Doris Duke Impact Award in 2014, and a Shifting Foundation grant in 2013. Ben continues to perform original music internationally in solo and trio settings, and in a long-standing duo project with vocalist Theo Bleckmann. He has appeared on over 200 CDs as a sideman and has released 6 as a leader: Amorphae (ECM, 2015), Hydra (Sunnyside, 2013), Oceana (Sunnyside, 2005), Excavation (Arabesque, 2000), Dust (Arabesque, 1997), and Flux (Songlines,1995).

Acclaimed jazz guitarists Gilad Hekselman & Steve Cardenas join forces for a special collaborative evening of jazz and more at Zinc on Monday, September 12.

Gilad Hekselman is one of the leading voices in jazz guitar. Only a few years after his arrival to NY in 2004, this native Israeli was already sharing stages with some of the greatest artists in the New York City jazz scene including Chris Potter, Eric Harland, Mark Turner, Anat Cohen, Ari Hoenig, Esperanza Spalding, Jeff Ballard, Ben Wendel, Gretchen Parlato, Ben Williams, Avishai Cohen, Tigran Hamasyan, Aaron Parks and Becca Stevens among many others.

Steve Cardenas has many diverse credits as a performer and recording artist. Beginning his musical career in his hometown of Kansas City, he has been an integral part of the New York City jazz community since 1995. Steve has performed with many well-known and highly esteemed musicians. Notably, he was a longstanding member of the Paul Motian Electric Bebop Band (which later became the Paul Motian Octet) as well as Joey Baron’s band, Killer Joey. Steve is currently a member of the Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra, Steve Swallow Quintet, and the Ben Allison Band. He has toured the U.S., Canada, Europe, and South America extensively, performing at numerous jazz festivals, including the North Sea Jazz Festival and Montreux Jazz Festival. In addition, Steve leads his own trio, performing at various venues around New York City.
