Acclaimed pianist Uri Caine brings his formidable trio to Zinc for a splendid evening of jazz piano on Tuesday, August 16. He’s supported by bassist Mark Helias and drummer Ben Perowsky.

Jazz pianist/composer Uri Caine brings an eclectic array of disciplines and influences to his music. His own Jewish heritage, his classical and jazz training, and his interest in electronics combine in ambitious hybrids that are often challenging but always inventive.

Caine has received commissions to compose music for the American Composers Orchestra, The Arditti Quartet, The Vienna Volksoper, Concerto Koln, The Basel Chamber Orchestra, and The Beaux Arts Trio among others. His most recent orchestral composition “Sunburst” was performed in June 2016 at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Sicily. He also served as the Director of The Venice Biennale in 2003. Caine has received grants from The National Endowment for the Arts, The Pew Foundation, and The USA Artist Fellowships and has performed at numerous festivals including the North Sea, Monterey, Montreal, and Newport Jazz Festival as well as classical festivals like the Salzburg Festival, the Munich Opera, Holland Festival, IRCAM and Great Performers at Lincoln Center. He has recorded over 30 albums as a leader and was nominated for a Grammy® Award for The Othello Syndrome (Winter and Winter) in 2009.

Acclaimed jazz guitarists Gene Bertoncini & Roni Ben-Hur return to Zinc for a special collaborative evening of music on Monday, August 29.

Gene Bertoncini is one of the pre-eminent jazz guitarists active today. His fluid technique and lyricism have won him international praise and accolades as the “Segovia of jazz.” An eloquent and versatile improviser, Mr. Bertoncini has been heard with an extraordinary range of jazz greats, including performances and recordings with Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws, and Paul Desmond among others, as well as such distinguished singers as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Nancy Wilson, Vic Damone, and Eydie Gorme.

Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator, renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism, and ability to charm peers, students, and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist, Ben-Hur keeps the flame alive and pure, burning in every note… He’s a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.” Roni — born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen, based in the New York City area — has recorded a dozen-plus album as leader or co-leader, with The New York Times praising his “crisp, fluid style” and Time Out New York calling him “a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist.” He has developed a rare facility in both straight-ahead jazz and samba/bossa-nova styles, underscored by his work with masters in each field, from bebop piano sage Barry Harris and winds ace Frank Wess to beloved Brazilian vocalist Leny Andrade and composer Marcos Valle.

All the rumors are true: John Mulaney is headed to NJPAC. The Emmy-winning writer, actor, comedian and SNL alum is on tour with From Scratch, a new set tackling addiction, relapse and controversy in the public eye. With brutal honesty and cutting introspection, John’s stand-up is as funny as ever. (The “I Saw Him Right After He Got Outta Rehab” shirts are pretty good, too.) John Yao and His 17-piece Instrument (JY-17 for short) features the diverse compositions of trombonist, composer and arranger John Yao. Established in 2014, the 17-piece ensemble is comprised of New York City’s finest jazz musicians including members of Grammy- award winning ensembles such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, both of which Yao has been a regular substitute for over a decade and have had a profound influence on his compositional style. “At times angular and broken, other times linear and swinging, he offers a broad view of the possibilities of jazz composition,” says Jim McNeely of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. In celebration of his birthday month of August, the JY-17 will perform the music of jazz legend Charlie Parker. The band will premiere several new arrangements that will put a new spin on Bird’s music.

Yao’s compositions and arrangements are post-bop, experimental and aim to explore new sounds for big band. “At times angular and broken, other times linear and swinging, he offers a broad view of the possibilities of jazz composition,” says Jim McNeely of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Downbeat says, "[Flip-Flop] showcased Yao's unpredictable compositions and inventive arrangements, which spring from tradition while pointing toward future portals." For this performance, the JY-17 will perform selections from the Beyond Suite and music from their album "Flip-Flop".

Gabrielle Stravelli’s pairing of a jazz artist’s musicianship with an ability to interpret lyrics and connect with an audience has led to a richly varied career. She premiered pianist Fred Hersch’s song cycle “Rooms of Light”, toured the U.S. premiering Wynton Marsalis’s “Abyssinian Mass”, has headlined international and domestic jazz festivals and regularly leads her quartet in performances at the country’s finest jazz clubs and performing arts centers. “Dream Ago,” her 2017 release which consists primarily of original material, received a rare 5- star review from Downbeat Magazine and her 2019 release “Pick Up My Pieces: Gabrielle Stravelli Sings Willie Nelson” was featured by noted music critic Will Friedwald in the WSJ and awarded the 2020 Bistro Award for Outstanding Recording. A 2014 run of solo shows at New York’s Metropolitan Room earned her a career-launching rave review in The New York Times, followed by a second Times rave for a run of shows at Feinstein’s/54 Below in 2015. That same year she was chosen for the U.S. State Department’s “American Music Abroad” program for which she has performed and taught throughout Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and South America.
