One of the greatest interpreters of American popular song, Catherine Russell won a Grammy for her work on the soundtrack for HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’.

Russell’s music evokes her familial heritage as jazz royalty. Her father, Luis Russell, was a legendary pianist who served for many years as Louis Armstrong’s musical director.

Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering multi-instrumentalist who performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, & Sy Oliver.

Catherine Russell can be heard on over 200 recordings & has toured & recorded with Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm, Toshi Reagon & Rosanne Cash, among others.

Jazz United is a wide-ranging conversation show from WBGO, hosted by critic Nate Chinen and broadcaster Greg Bryant. Covering a host of subjects relevant to the musical community, it draws on the shared enthusiasms of its hosts as well as some key differences. Bryant, the host of Jazz After Hours, is a seasoned radio host and musician; Chinen is a longtime journalist and the author of Playing Changes: Jazz For the New Century. Jazz United brings their distinct perspectives into dialogue, with the music always in center focus.
