Acclaimed Venezuelan jazz pianist Silvano Monasterios brings his trio to the Zinc Bar for a splendid evening of jazz piano. He’s supported by bassist Ricky Rodriguez and drummer Jimmy McBride.

Pianist-composer Silvano Monasterios was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He spent his formative years of training at the Jose Angel Lamas Conservatory while he alternately encountered the great American jazz tradition in all its diversity. He promptly began his professional career at the age of 18, combining these influences by performing and recording with some of the most prominent Venezuelan artists of the time.

In 1989, Silvano traveled to Miami, Florida, to participate in the Miami Jazz Festival, where he received a “Best Soloist Award.” By 1990, he had immigrated to the United States to make use of a scholarship from Miami-Dade College. More recognition followed with another “Outstanding Soloist Award” at the University of Colorado in 1991 and then a music scholarship from the University of Miami, from which he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1995. In 1998, Silvano was voted “New Artist of the Year” at the Hennessey Cognac Jazz Search in New York City, which led to a slot at the Playboy Jazz Festival where he engendered many new friends and fans. This year also marked the release of his first CD, “Roads Not Taken”, prompting more critical interest in the U.S. and Latin America.

Terence Blanchard isn’t your average jazz musician—the world-renowned trumpet player and festival alum is also a prolific Academy Award-nominated film composer and an exciting new voice in the opera world. For his latest album Absence, his electro-acoustic quintet E-Collective joins forces with violinist David Balakrishnan’s Turtle Island Quartet. Their Charlie Parker Jazz Festival performance will feature works from the Wayne Shorter tribute album, which features five compositions from the legendary saxophonist. They’re joined by the jazz bassist Buster Williams, who has played with a Who’s Who of jazz greats from Mary Lou Williams to Herbie Hancock, and is the subject of the JazzTimes Documentary Film of the Year, Bass to Infinity. Buster will play with his all-star quartet Something More. Vibraphonist Nikara Warren will perform her album Black Wall Street, which melds hip-hop, jazz, neo-soul, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms into an abstract sound-collage that “take pieces of black music and give it a platform to show black musical beauty.” Vuyo Sotashe, a South African jazz vocalist, is making his mark in the New York jazz scene.

This engagement of Buster Williams & Something More is made possible through the ArtsCONNECT program of Mid Atlantic Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. 

Saxophonist Bill Saxton and His Harlem All-Stars return to the Englewood Public Library on Thursday, July 14th at 7:30 p.m. on the library’s front lawn and plaza. This will be the 4th installment in the library’s 10th annual jazz concert series “Jazz Under the Stars.” The concert series is free and open to the public. No registration is needed, but library parking is very limited. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church one block north at 113 Engle St.
Bill Saxton has composed more than 80 musical compositions. Tunes such as Beneath the Surface, One for Booker and Priorities earned a three star rating and critical acclaim in Downbeat, BeBop, and Beyond magazines.
Saxton has toured with the US State Department extensively in West Africa. He went on to play across Europe and into Japan and the Caribbean. Among his many honors and accolades, Saxton was honored by the White House during Black Music Month, the Harlem Jazz Museum has featured his life, and The Library of Music at New York’s Lincoln Center housed his induction as a Jazz Legend.
Bill rejuvenated a historical jazz landmark when he opened “Bill’s Place” in 2006. Saxton has since devoted a considerable portion of his creative energies to managing and playing at the club, while continuing to appear on recordings as a sideman.

Acclaimed jazz pianist Ethan Iverson brings his formidable trio to Zinc for a splendid evening of jazz piano.

Pianist, composer, and writer Ethan Iverson was a founding member of The Bad Plus, a game-changing collective with Reid Anderson and David King. The New York Times called TBP “…Better than anyone at melding the sensibilities of post-60’s jazz and indie rock.” During his 17-year tenure TBP performed in venues as diverse as the Village Vanguard, Carnegie Hall, and Bonnaroo; collaborated with Joshua Redman, Bill Frisell, and the Mark Morris Dance Group; and created a faithful arrangement of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and a radical reinvention of Ornette Coleman’s Science Fiction.

Iverson also has been in the critically-acclaimed Billy Hart quartet for well over a decade and occasionally performs with an elder statesman like Albert “Tootie” Heath or Ron Carter. For over 15 years Iverson’s website Do the Math has been a repository of musician-to-musician interviews and analysis, surely one reason Time Out New York selected Iverson as one of 25 essential New York jazz icons: “Perhaps NYC’s most thoughtful and passionate student of jazz tradition—the most admirable sort of artist-scholar.”

Ryan Berg withWill Gorman-piano and Noel Sagerman , drums.Ryan Berg was born into a musical family. His parents were musicians. His grandparents were musicians. He has made himself a staple on the New York jazz scene being mentioned in numerous blogs where fans have claimed to have “loved the bass player in that band”. He has also been interviewed for Smalls live and other music publications and has played with a virtual who’s who of the jazz world touring throughout the globe. Some of the musicians Ryan has played or recorded with include: Brianna Thomas, Gregory Porter, Ravi Coltrane, Mark Whitfield, JD Allen, Jeff Coffin, Lenny White, Rashid Ali, Gerald Clayton, Joe Sanders, Logan Richardson, Roy Hargrove, and many others… In addition to this, he has played on many albums, been a band member for a television show produced by Kelsey Grammer and been a member of many Broadway shows. Ryan is currently working on his own project producing, writing, recording, and playing on his upcoming album to be released in 2020. It is this that is one of his current passions along with his current efforts as a sideman with notable musicians such asBrianna Thomas, Josh Evans, Frank Lacy, Stacy Dillard, Jeremy Clemons, and many others. He is also a player on the Broadway musical scene and is well sought after for his studio recording work. Another passion of Ryan’s is the education of people through music in which Mr. Berg has taught through such venues as Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Jazz for Young People” program as well as many clinics, master classes, and private lessons throughout the world. He strives to teach people to “learn how to learn” through music.

A special co-production with ON SITE OPERA, this new cycle of fifteen songs, duets, and ensembles by fifteen composers was commissioned in honor of 5BMF’s 15th Anniversary and On Site Opera’s 10th Anniversary seasons, and marks the third installment of 5BMF’s critically-acclaimed quinquennial FIVE BOROUGH SONGBOOK project. Featuring new works by Arianne Abela, Raquel Acevedo Klein, Kinan Azmeh, Colin Britt, Majel Connery, Laura Jobin-Acosta, Will Healy, Brian Lawlor, Jessica Meyer, Angélica Negrón, Nkeiru Okoye, Juri Seo, Aaron Siegel, Darian Thomas, and Jonathan Woody, the Songbook derives its inspiration from locations scattered throughout New York City — three songs for each borough — to create a mosaic of the city’s past, present and future. The Songbook’s texts are drawn from a variety of sources: written by the composers themselves, from existing poetry (including Joseph Tusiani, Amy Lowell, and Walt Whitman), and newly-commissioned words in Arabic by Firas Sulaiman, in Spanish and English by Noel Quiñones, and by Valerie Seeley. This April, the Songbook, Vol III will receive its World Premiere in a free performance at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Dweck Cultural Center, co-presented by BPL PRESENTS, followed by the Staten Island premiere at Trinity Lutheran Church. Both concerts feature an all-star lineup of artists, including performers from the acclaimed vocal super-group KALEIDOSCOPE VOCAL ENSEMBLE — sopranos Michele Kennedy and Gitanjali Mathur, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Duarte, tenor Haitham Haidar, and bass-baritone Jonathan Woody — as well as pianist Candace Chien, violinist Pala Garcia, and cellist John Popham.
