  • History doesn’t stand still. It impacts, influences, and inspires the ebb and flow of the future by informing the present. Galactic draw on 25 years together in order to progress with each performance and subsequent record. After 10 albums, over 2,000 gigs, and tens of millions of streams, the proud New Orleans, LA quintet—Ben Ellman [saxophone, harmonica], Robert Mercurio [bass], Stanton Moore [drums, percussion], Jeffrey Raines [guitar], and Richard Vogal [keyboards]—have kept the torch burning through five U.S. presidential regimes, the turn-of-the-century, Hurricane Katrina, a Global Pandemic, and a much-anticipated recovery. They’re the rare collective who can support Juvenile on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, contribute music to a blockbuster soundtrack such as Now You See Me, and light up the stages of Coachella, Bonnaroo, and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (a staggering 22 times).

Joined by vocal powerhouse Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph, they continue to forge ahead with a 2021 headline tour and more new music.

“There is a history to the band, yet we continue to release and perform new material,” says Stanton. “I’m truly excited for our fans and audience to hear this next record we’ve been working on. I think it’s some of our best work yet.”

They laid the groundwork for this future upon coming together in 1994. Two years later, the guys dropped their full-length debut, Coolin’ Off, and hopped in a Ford Econoline van (with trailer in tow) for their very first official tour. Along the way, they released seminal albums such as 2007’s From the Corner to the Block, boasting collabs with the likes of Chali 2na, Juvenile, Trombone Shorty, DJ Z-Trip, and Boots Riley. During 2015, Into The Deep marked their first debut in the Top 25 of the Billboard Top 200 and second straight #1 bow on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz Albums Chart. Not to mention, it boasted the title track “Into The Deep” [feat. Macy Gray], racking up nearly 20 million streams and counting. Along the way, they performed alongside the likes of Dave Matthews Band, The Roots, Jack Johnson, Talib Kweli, the Allman Brothers Band, Widespread Panic, B.B. King, Counting Crows, James Brown, and many more. They’ve also recorded and performed with the likes of Allen Toussaint [“Bacchus”] and Big Freedia “Double It”]. Most recently, 2019’s Already Ready Already garnered acclaim from New York Times, NPR Weekend Edition, Exclaim!, and many more, while they’ve appeared on the covers of Downbeat and Relix Magazine.

Around the same time, they welcomed Jelly to the fold after joining forces on stage for a handful of unforgettable performances.

“I was super nervous at first, because I had some pretty big shoes to fill—but like those other singers I had to bring myself and I think I’ve fit in pretty well,” Jelly smiles.

“Jelly came to Fuji Rock in Japan with us to sing background with Macy Gray,” recalls Stanton. “We needed someone to sing one of our Galactic originals, and she stepped up. Since there was no time for rehearsal or soundcheck, she showed up prepared, knew the tune completely, and rocked it. When it came time to find someone new to sing with us, she was our first choice. She has such effortless stage presence and a very comfortable rapport with audiences. She also brings an element of unbridled fun!”

That fun came across loud and clear on the 2020 single “Float.” Uplifted by Jelly’s powerhouse pipes, it hinted at the potential of their collective chemistry.

“I love listening to Galactic’s older records, because they were very funk driven,” Jelly goes on. “Now, it seems like they’re incorporating more pop, rock, and soul to create a newer sound.”

As they continue writing, recording, and performing, Galactic always keep New Orleans close to their hearts at all times. In 2018, the band purchased and took over one of the city’s most hallowed venues—Tipitina’s Nightclub. Their history with the venue even predated the band as Ben’s first job was as a cook in the old kitchen, while they’ve graced its stage more than 100 times over the years.

In the end, Galactic keep moving forward as they add more chapters to their incredible history.

“We’ve just achieved 25 years as a band of brothers, so we know how to work with each other and move ourselves through the next 25 years,” Robert leaves off. “We’re always trying to push ourselves with our songwriting and studio collaborations. I look forward to where the future will take us.”

  • In the final weeks of Franz Schubert's tragically short life, he wrote one of the great masterworks in all of chamber music — his Quintet in C Major. In this new five-part course, Jonathan Coopersmith, Chair of Musical Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music, explores the work in depth, as well as the creative burst that spawned it. Benjamin Britten called Schubert's last year and a half "the richest and most productive 18 months in our music history," producing not only the Quintet, but Winterreise, the C-Major Symphony, the B-Flat and E-Flat Piano Trios, the Mass in E-Flat, and the final three piano sonatas. Coopersmith looks at the genius of the Quintet, what made Schubert a musical groundbreaker, and his unique place in bridging the Classical and Romantic eras. Two days after the course's final class, a Curtis on Tour ensemble performs the Quintet on the stage of Kaufmann Concert Hall, in a program also including the New York premiere of Richard Danielpour's A Shattered Vessel. We explore this work composed 190 years later for the same instrumentation of two violins, viola and two cellos, analyzing it as a standalone composition, and informed by the insights of a living composer. ** Online Class ** SCHUBERT'S QUINTET IN C MAJOR: A MASTERPIECE EXAMINED WEDNESDAYS, JAN 19-FEB 16, 7-8:15 PM ET. All patrons registering for this course will receive a special discount code for Curtis on Tour appearances on 92Y's concert series. This discount code will be provided in a separate email upon registration. Register for the class here: https://www.92y.org/class/schubert-s-quintet-in-c-major?utm_source=SFMC&utm_medium=&utm_campaign=&mcSID=528535. **IN PERSON AND ONLINE** LIVE CONCERT MUSICIANS FROM THE CURTIS INSTITUTE OF MUSIC PLAY SCHUBERT'S QUINTET AND MORE FRIDAY, FEB 18, 7:30 PM ET, FROM $20 In this first concert in a new alliance between 92Y and the world-renowned Curtis Institute of Music, an ensemble comprising esteemed faculty — including Ida Kavafian on violin and Peter Wiley on cello — and recent alumni of Curtis perform one of the greatest masterworks in chamber music, Schubert's sublimely beautiful C-Major Quintet. The quintet is followed by the New York premiere of a new work by another member of Curtis' faculty, with Grammy Award-winning composer Richard Danielpour's A Shattered Vessel. Written 190 years after the Schubert work for the same instrumentation of two violins, viola and two cellos, A Shattered Vessel contemplates crisis and struggle, loss and healing, renewal and gratitude. A splendid and soulful program from some of the finest chamber musicians performing today. • Rhymes With Opera presents a live, virtual production of Red Giant on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at 7pm ET which will be available for streaming beginning June 22, 2021 at 7pm ET. Red Giant will feature three singers performing synchronously from three different cities: soprano Bonnie Lander in Baltimore, MD; soprano Elisabeth Halliday-Quan in Rochester, NY; and baritone Robert Maril in New York, NY. They will be accompanied by the Rhymes With Orchestra, Adam Matlock's new sci-fi opera Red Giant is a compelling chamber opera that tells the story of three people who are lost in space and struggling with the aftermath of humanity as their former home planet becomes uninhabitable. Tickets for the live performance are $20 and $10 for streaming and can be purchased online at www.rhymeswithopera.org/red-giant-2021. Ticket buyers for the live performance will also have access to stream the production. "As a lifelong fan of Science Fiction and a composer enamored of opera as a medium, it only made sense to combine the two when given the opportunity to work on a piece," said Matlock. "Of course in the beginning the scenario - people trying to escape a planet's surface that has become uninhabitable due to their sun becoming the titular 'Red Giant' - was pure fantasy. But in the nearly decade since this piece was first written, we've seen governments and societies struggle to reach a consensus as to whether or not climate change is really happening in the face of readily observable evidence - and it's hard not to feel that this story has gained some resonance in the face of that. And of course, even in the face of a true existential crisis, humans will still find time to bicker." Red Giant is Rhymes With Opera's first revival. The piece was originally performed in 2014 and was slated to be revived in May 2020. It is commissioned, produced and performed by Rhymes With Opera. Run time is approx. 40 minutes. Red Giant Opera in One Act (RWO Commission) Adam Matlock, composer Brian Slattery, librettist Ashley Tata, director Eamonn Farrell, video designer Afsoon Pajoufar, set design Aislinn Curry, stage management  Elisabeth Halliday-Quan, soprano Bonnie Lander, soprano Baritone Robert Maril  George Tsz-Kwan Lam, conductor  Tia Allen, viola Zach Herchen, saxophone Chris Wilson, piano Thomas Lai, violin Maiko Hosoda, percussion Jenna Girone-Virgilio, cello David Crandall, radio announcer Artist Bio Adam Matlock is an accordionist, composer, and vocalist living and working in New Haven, CT. Matlock writes and performs songs under the name An Historic, building narratives accompanied by musical inspirations from Balkan music and Klezmer, Soul, and various strains of rock. An Historic exists as a solo project, but is reinforced live and on record with the members of Dr. Caterwauls Cadre of Clairvoyant Claptraps, a folk/jazz band with flexible instrumentation. Matlock also composes under his own name, most notably the opera Red Giant (2014) for 6 piece ensemble and three singers, commissioned by Rhymes With Opera; and Earthseed Songs (2012) for voice and two instrumentalists; he also composes and performs keyboard-based music under a variety of aliases. Matlock has performed original music and arrangements with Broadcloth, The Yale Klezmer Band, Orkestar BAM, and the Harris Brothers Balkan Band, in addition to the aforementioned projects. He has recorded, performed, or improvised with artists including Anthony Braxton, Mario Pavone, Ceschi, Vinny Golia, Sigh, and Clara Engel, and works as a music teacher in the New Haven area. Rhymes With Opera is a New York-based ensemble of performers and composers that expands the repertory of contemporary opera by commissioning, developing and staging new chamber works. Founded in 2007, Rhymes With Opera includes founding company members Ruby Fulton (composer); Elisabeth Halliday-Quan (soprano); George Tsz-Kwan Lam (composer); Bonnie Lander (soprano); and Robert Maril (baritone). During the 2012-2013 season, Rhymes With Opera expanded to include a house band, the Rhymes With Orchestra, a chamber ensemble comprised of some of this generation's most exciting contemporary instrumentalists. With the addition of the RWOrchestra, RWO has become a self-contained contemporary opera machine, commissioning and producing works that can be performed whole-cloth by the company. Since 2007, RWO has commissioned more than 17 new operas, ranging from one-minute "signature" pieces to evening-length productions. In addition to premiering works by founders Fulton and Lam, new operas commissioned and produced by RWO include Vid Smooke's Criminal Element, Adam Matlock's Red Giant, Anna Meadors' Manifesto on the Ledge, Daniel Thomas Davis' The Impossible She, and Erik Spangler's Cantata For A Loop Trail, an outdoor hiking opera set in Gwynn Falls Leakin Park in Baltimore and Inwood Hill Park in New York City.
