In commemoration of Juneteenth, Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner and Hadestown star André De Shields performs an excerpt from his self-crafted solo work “Frederick Douglass: Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory.” The one-man show explores the life and achievements of the great emancipator Frederick Douglass.

“Though Douglass began his life as a slave, through heroic effort, he became one of America’s most important and historically influential icons,” said De Shields. “Frederick Douglass: Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory” tells a story about brutality and deliverance that is implausible yet historically accurate. De Shields portrays the Great Black Emancipator with a performance that is as filled with hope and achievement as it is darkness and anger.

Enigmatic guitarist Marc Ribot has released 6 very diverse solo guitar albums. 2010's, Silent Movies (Pi Recordings) has been described as a "down-in-mouth-near master piece" by the Village Voice and has landed on several Best of 2010 lists including the LA Times and critical praise across the board. His live solo performances are unpredictable events which may draw on all of these or none, creating a sonic matrix of memory, free improvisation, zeitgeist, extra-terrestrial radio signals, and much more...always leaving the listener on the edge of their seats.

Emilio Valdes was born in Havana, Cuba, part of a musical dynasty made famous by his grandfather, pianist, composer, arranger and Cuban Jazz musician, Bebo Valdes, followed by his father Chucho Valdes, creator of the vanguard afro Cuban jazz group Irakere and figurehead of Cuban music. Emilio has also performed and collaborated with Bebo and Chucho Valdes.
