  • Jay Clayton has been key to the successful development of the Vermont Jazz Center’s vocal program. Dearly loved by her students, she combines a deep knowledge of the music with compassion for all. She swings like crazy, engenders the perfect emotion while singing a ballad, and has us on the edge of our chairs when creating on-the-spot improvisations, oftentimes including her original poetry. Downbeat Magazine says “her musicianship is impeccable;” that’s one of the reasons why she attracts such stellar support both on-stage and on-record. Clayton has 21 albums out as a leader/co-leader featuring pianists Stanley Cowell, Fred Hersch, Muhal Richard Abrams, and George Cables. A sample of other world-class musicians she has recorded with include Steve Reich, Jane Ira Bloom, John Cage, Norma Winstone, Houston Person, Gary Peacock, Jerry Granelli and Bobby McFerrin. Clayton co-teaches the VJC’s Summer Jazz Workshop with Sheila Jordan and shares her wisdom online during the pandemic. The Jazz Center is grateful that Jay Clayton has chosen the VJC as the site to celebrate her 80th birthday. For this performance she will be joined by pianist Ray Gallon along with Jay Leonhart (b) and Billy Drummond (d). Sponsored by Judy Fink & Rob Freeberg (In Memory of Helen & Milton Fink) & by Beth Logan Raffeld & Philip Khoury Mask & proof of vaccination required. www.vtjazz.org gingervjc@gmail.com 802 258 9088 https://vtjazz.org/upcoming-events/concerts/ https://vtjazz.org/upcoming-events/sliding-scale-ticket-policy/ https://vtjazz.org/2021-safety-protocols-for-in-person-activities/ Vermont Jazz Center 72 Cotton Mill Hill #222 Brattleboro VT 05301

In 2019, we moved the Festival from the Goshen Fairgrounds to the Frederick Gunn School (FGS), the summer home of Litchfield Jazz Camp. This year we welcome audiences to the Tisch Auditorium in the new, state-of-the-art (and air-conditioned) Thomas Perakos Performing Arts Center.

  • “a tough, intensely rhythmic player.” —The New York Times

“The best young guitarist in the business.” —The New York Times

Acclaimed jazz guitarists Ron Affif & Mark Whitfield bring their formidable quartet to Zinc jazz club on Monday, June 27. They're supported by organist Pat Bianchi and drummer Byron Landham.

Mark Whitfield graduated from Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, the world’s foremost institution for the study of Jazz and modern American music in the spring of 1987. Shortly thereafter, he returned to his native New York to embark on a career as a Jazz Guitarist that afforded him the opportunity to collaborate with legendary artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, Carmen McRae, Gladys Knight, Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Smith, Clark Terry, Shirley Horn, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Joe Williams, Stanley Turrentine and his greatest teacher and mentor George Benson.

Ron Affif has gained a reputation for his personal approach to jazz, playing with a muscular realism as he looks for new expression in tunes from the Great American Songbook. The nephew of guitarist Ron Anthony (who played with George Shearing and Frank Sinatra), Ron Affif received his first guitar lesson from his uncle when he was 12. After high school, he moved to Los Angeles in 1984, playing with Dick Berk, Dave Pike, Pete Christlieb, and Jack Sheldon and recording a quartet date for the R.A. Records label in 1987. Two years later, he moved to New York and has since worked mostly as a leader. Affif, an excellent bop-based guitarist whose style was influenced a bit by Joe Pass and George Benson (both of whom in turn enjoyed his playing), has recorded several impressive albums for Pablo.

Showtimes are at 7:00 pm & 8:30 pm. Tickets: $20 in advance / $25 day of show. For more info, call (212) 477-9462 or visit https://www.zincjazz.com.

  • Parisian Cabaret Revival features Margot Sergent, an acclaimed parisian born cabaret singer, actress, and harpist who sang her way up from Parisian clubs to prestigious venues such as Olympia, almost mirroring the career path of Edith Piaf. So French Cabaret is a trad jazz ensemble featuring the voice of Margot Sergent soaring over her lyrical harp. Accompanied by upright bass and guitar, Margot croons timeless classics. She embodies the longtime exchange between France and America, Paris and New York, evoking a midcentury spirit. Her golden harp adds that “je ne sais quoi” to their irresistible hot jazz groove. Experience the romance and excitement of the prohibition era as you lapse into french reverie. On the encouragement of mentors, she then attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music to nourish her passion for jazz, and was trained by renowned masters Ed Tomassi and Maggie Scott (former mentors of Diana Krall and Esperanza Spalding). Making a splash in New York City, Margot Sergent will take you by storm with her infectious passion and dedication to French chansons and torch ballads in the unforgettable French legacy of Parisian Cabaret storytelling. Her voice enriched with emotion, Margot distills the essence of each lyric, weaving together a greater narrative. Margot is, without a doubt, the preeminent ambassador of Piaf’s legacy at this time. This enchanting show is not one to be missed. Allow yourself to be transported in time to the sonic worlds of “La Vie en Rose”, “Non, je ne regrette rien”, “l’Hymne à l’Amour” and other jewel songs that revolutionized the cabaret-genre and made Piaf, Trenet, Aznavour some of the greatest singer-storytellers of all time. “Her lyrical voice, with a native French accent, is perfect for a set of French and American chanson from the 1930s and 1940s,.. depicting the highly emotional lyrics of heartbreak and tragedy.” -InfocusVisions Music Magazine- “Margot’s live performances convey a physical delight in playing music as well as an artist’s sensitivity to the complicated harmonies and rhythms of jazz; her harp is a perfect instrument, attached to a musician of superb instincts, capable of expressing profound human experiences, with a wholly original voice. Margot’s technique and interpretative skills are at the pinnacle of the musical industry; what she does is pure poetry. No doubt she is one of the most captivating artists of her generation.” -Archie Sheep, legendary jazz saxophonist.
