  • Join us on October 14th as Flushing Town Hall presents “The Swinging Sounds of Coleman Hawkins” featuring Lew Tabackin and his ensemble.

Saxophonist Lew Tabackin, one of New York City’s most notable Jazz musicians, was presented a lifetime achievement award on July 16th at the restaurant and music venue Birdland by The Jazz Foundation of America.

Tabackin has shared the stage with numerous other Jazz luminaries such as Clark Terry, Donald Byrd, Elvin Jones, Cab Calloway, and Mel Lewis.

On October 14th, Lew Tabackin will play tribute to the great Coleman Hawkins live at the historic Flushing Town Hall Theater, a fitting location considering its significance along the Queens Jazz Trail.

Tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins was one of the first saxophonists to bring attention to the saxophone as a solo instrument in 1939 when he played it on the song “Body and Soul”.

Hawkins is credited as the first major saxophonist in Jazz History. His inventive style of improvising influenced many leading Jazz figures such as Ben Webster, Chu Berry, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane.

As part of this performance, Tabackin will be supported by pianist Jeb Patton, Gerald Cammon on bass, and Jason Tiemann on drums. In addition, a special guest trumpet player will appear and play some of the groundbreaking music that Coleman Hawkins made popular in the international jazz world.

“The Swinging Sounds of Coleman Hawkins” will feature an array of music that Hawkins himself played during his tenure with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, recordings with Benny Goodman, Django Reinhardht, and many others.

Don’t miss out on this important milestone concert!
  • World-renowned guitarist and four-time GRAMMY nominee Stanley Jordan returns to the Emelin to channel the late, great Jimi Hendrix in his show called “Stanley Jordan Plays Jimi.” This is a tribute show, but it’s not pure imitation. Instead Stanley builds on Jimi’s legacy in a myriad of creative way. As Stanley explains it, “This is my fantasy Jimi Hendrix concert if Jimi were still alive and playing today. By re-imagining his music and channeling his persona I try to bring that fantasy to life.” It may be surprising that a rock legend like Hendrix would get so much love from a jazz legend like Jordan. Stanley’s 1985 album Magic Touch was #1 on Billboard’s jazz chart for 51 weeks, and Stanley has shared the stage or recorded with jazz artists such as Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Billy Cobham. But again, hearing it from Stanley, “I actually played rock and blues before I played jazz. In fact, Jimi’s constant searching for new sounds inspired me to move toward jazz in the first place.” It may also be surprising that Stanley Jordan would take on a project like this. After all, Stanley is a well-known guitarist with a signature style, has four GRAMMY nominations, a cameo in a Blake Edwards film Blind Date), and a host of TV appearances over a long career including “Jimmy Fallon,” “David Letterman,” “Jay Leno” and “Johnny Carson” to name a few. Stanley explains he took on a project like this because, “I feel a strong connection to Jimi Hendrix because he was the first guitarist I emulated as a child. Out of love for Jimi and his music I feel a strong desire to try to keep his legacy alive.” In recent years, Stanley has performed with many artists in the rock and jam-band worlds, including the Dave Matthews Band, Umphrey’s McGee, Moe. and more. Stanley says, “Returning to my rock roots has been an absolute joy artistically, and with this project, I’m taking that to a new level.”
  • Oz Noy brings his trio with Anton Fig on drums“It’s Jazz. It just doesn’t sound like it.” This is how virtuoso guitarist Oz Noy describes his intoxicating blend of jazz, funk, rock, blues, and r&b. Born in Israel, Oz started his professional career at the age of 13 playing jazz, blues, pop and rock music. By age 16, he was playing with top Israeli musicians and artists. By age 24, he was one of the most established studio guitar players in the country. Oz was also a member of the house band on Israel’s top-rated television show for more than two years. Since his 1996 arrival in New York, Oz has made a huge impact on the local and international music scene. His unique and intoxicating style has broken all the rules of instrumental guitar music by focusing on the groove. All-stars such as Keith Carlock, Anton Fig, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Dave Weckl often contribute on drums, with bassists Will Lee, James Genus, and Reggie Washington. In 2003, Oz released his debut record – “Oz Live” – recorded at NYC’s legendary Bitter End. In 2004, Oz signed with Magna Carta Records and in 2005, released his highly-acclaimed studio record “HA!” with his all-star band featuring Fig, Carlock, Lee and Genus plus special guests Mike Stern and George Whitty. In April of 2007, a licensing deal with Magna Carta and Japanese label Videoarts opened the door for Oz’s music in Japan. Later that year saw the release of “Fuzzy,” Oz’s third record under the Magna Carta label. For Fuzzy, Oz’s all-star band is joined by various special guests including Colaiuta, bassist Jimmy Johnson, and keyboardists Whitty and Jim Beard. The Cove is fast becoming a leading jazz venue in the lower Hudson Valley.

The second concert of the Jazz Alive Summer Concert Series takes place on July 30, 2022 with Philadelphia-based vocalist Joanna Pascale, who insists that she cannot perform a song unless she can connect personally with its lyrics. But once she's found that connection, there's no one who can better convey the emotion of those words more directly and intimately than Pascale. A singer of sophisticated taste, profound expressiveness, and raw emotion, Pascale is also a gifted educator who is a member of the vocal faculty at both Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania. She's been featured on recordings by Jeremy Pelt, Tim Warfield, Orrin Evans, Larry McKenna, the Temple University Jazz Band, and Garry Dial and Dick Oatts. Pascale made her recording debut with 2004's When Lights Are Low, followed by the 2008 CD Through My Eyes and a 2010 duo recording with pianist Anthony Wonsey. With the 2015 release of Wildflower, she revealed her most personal and diverse collection to date.
