  • Sparks & Wiry Cries’ songSLAM Festival concludes on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 7pm EST at the Blue Building with the NYC songSLAM, a unique community event for composer/performer teams to premiere new art songs and compete for cash prizes, determined by audience voting. songSLAM prizes include First Place ($1,000), Second Place ($600), and Third Place ($400). Additionally, one team will be selected by Sparks & Wiry Cries for a paid commission in a future season. Building on the incredible response and broad audience reach of the virtual songSLAM in January 2021, Sparks & Wiry Cries will incorporate both recorded and live elements into the 2022 NYC songSLAM competition. For this hybrid format, all participating teams recorded their entry professionally in November 2021; recordings will be shared virtually on Sparks & Wiry Cries’ website and YouTube channel between January 7 to 15, 2022. This final live performance concludes the voting period. Teams will compete via a text-to-vote function through Give Lively and audiences can vote for as little as $1 starting January 7, 2022 through the Sparks & Wiry Cries website. Teams that raise the most funds will win songSLAM awards. Funds raised during the event are reinvested into larger commissions, future competitions, and new art song initiatives.

He's come a long way from his nights of frying up mozzarella sticks in the back room of a popular Boston comedy club. He was a college student, using that part-time job to study the craft of stand-up comedy by catching glimpses of the performers on stage. Jamie Bernstein will pull back the curtain of her father’s complex persona, sharing intimate moments and childhood memories from her book, Famous Father Girl: A Memoir of Growing Up Bernstein. Jazz pianist Bill Charlap & the Bill Charlap Trio will perform Bernstein classics, including “America,” “Lucky To Be Me,” “Some Other Time,” “Glitter and be Gay,” “Somewhere,” and “Cool.” Don’t miss this joyful tribute to America’s most iconic composer-conductor.
  • DROM is proud to launch its first weekly artist residency with famed percussionist and vocalist Pedrito Martinez and his group. The Grammy-nominated Cuban musician will bring his signature, high-energy Afro-Cuban sound to the East Village venue every Thursday, starting February 3rd, 2022, effectively kicking off the venue’s 15th Anniversary season. Martinez has performed at DROM regularly since the venue re-opened in May after a 15-month hiatus due to the COVID pandemic. His latest album, Acertijos (released March 2021), was nominated for Best Contemporary Tropical Album in this year’s Latin Grammys. In July 2020, Pedrito invited singer Camilla Cabello — with whom he has been recording at the time — to DROM. Together they performed her current global hit “Don’t Go Yet”, a single that features Pedrito and Manuel Marquez, a member of his group. For his weekly residency Pedrito will perform alongside Sebastian Natal on bass and vocals, Issac Delgado Jr on keyboard and vocals, Jose “Xito” Lovell on trombone and vocals and Manuel Marquez percussion and vocals. More special special guests and dancers will make appearances throughout the series.


  • As a Jazz Vocalist, Rome has performed at Town Hall on Broadway, The Metropolitan Room, The Museum of the City of New York, Lenox Lounge, Joe’s Pub, Saint Nick's Pub, Minton's Playhouse, Showman's, 966 Jazz, Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit, The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, The Jazz Spot, and has performed around town as the lead vocalist for the Bill Lee Mo' Better Quintet (Spike's father). Mr. Neal has a CD entitled: "A Brighter Crooner", and his live concert "All in The Puddin'' available on DVD along with his "Rome Neal's Banana Puddin' Jazz Jam... A Night To Remember"

  • Gotham Early Music Scene (GEMS) continues the inaugural season of its Open Gates Project with C3: Countertenors, a Consort, and Continuo, a program featuring a roster of countertenors of color alongside a consort of viols. The concert will also be livestreamed. Featured artists in this unique program include countertenors Biraj Barkakaty, Wei En Chan, Patrick Dailey, Iván Maria Feliciano (special guest young artist), and Jonathan May, with viol consort composed of Motomi Igarashi, Larry Lipnik, Rosamund Morley, and Pat Neely, with Dongsok Shin on harpsichord. The program includes Gabrieli’s Vieni, Vieni, Himeneo, Handel’s Ombra mai fu, Monteverdi’s Pur ti miro, Cavalli’s Pur Ti Stringo, and consort songs by Purcell and William Byrd, in addition to Trevor Weston’s O Maria. GEMS’ Open Gates Project offers a rich variety of music performed by distinguished professional artists at locations throughout New York City. The series is dedicated to creating greater access to stages for musicians of color in Early Music, while also seeking to create greater access to Early Music for underserved communities. The Project aims to see increased diversity on the stage and in the audience.
  • To continue safely serving our community of artists and audience members, Arts for Art is filming and releasing new performances on Tuesdays and Thursdays in January, February, and March. A pay-what-you-can donation is required to view each video. All donations will go towards AFA’s Artists & Friends Campaign. About Rob Brown: Rob Brown was born in 1962 in Hampton VA. Rob took up the saxophone at age 12. Early on he was introduced to the music of Charlie Parker and Eric Dolphy by his older brother who also played the saxophone. Rob moved to New York in 1984 and established the musical relationships that came to define his career. Immediately he re-established ties with pianist Matthew Shipp whom he met in Boston in 1982 and continued to develop an improvising language with him. Rob also began working with William Parker’s many ensembles and has continued to be very active with him for almost 30 years, touring Europe and the US and recording at least 18 albums. Rob has been collaborating with visual artist Jo Wood-Brown since they met in 1996. Often performing live with Jo’s frequent collaborator dancer/choreographer Miriam Parker and/or creating sound for video and other installations.
  • LaQuin & the Family Band play a mixture of funk, soul, and blues and will be performing in NYC for the first time since relocating back to Texas. Come out and get your dance on to this unique blend of Texas soul. LaQuin & the Family Tree Band are a mission driven funk and improvisation band consisting of sax, drums, guitar, and LaQuin's on spot arrangements driven by Ableton Push. This performance will feature LaQuin Lay on saxophone, Brett Calder on guitar, and Andrew Marsh on drums!

  • Eugene Uman’s Convergence Project

    The VJC’s artistic director, Eugene Uman (piano,composition) presents the culmination of a year’s worth of composing and collaborating.

    Listeners can expect a “convergence” of the music he loves, including references to Colombian rhythms, swinging jazz and funk.

    This year features Michael Zsoldos (saxophone), Jeff Galindo (trombone), & the group’s original rhythm section: Stomu Takeishi (bass) and Satoshi Takeishi (drums).


    This year each concert has an in-person audience & a livestream component. You may purchase in-person tickets above &/or donate to the livestream. Please give generously and support live music.

  • New York Classical Players (NYCP) presents Hommage à J.S. Bach, featuring the U.S. premiere of Vivian Fung’s Concerto for Two Violins and String Orchestra, as well as Eric Nathan’s Dancing with J. S. Bach No. 1, both of which draw inspiration from Bach’s musical innovations. The program also includes J.S. Bach’s beloved Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and Concerto for Two Violins in D minor. NYCP Music Director Dongmin Kim conducts the concerts, which feature violinists Kristin Lee, Harriet Langley, and Brian Hong. This performance is less than 90 minutes and presented without intermission. Your donation is essential and will keep us doing our concerts FREE.
