(Downbeat) Focusing on the rich contributions of a diverse selection of female composers, Alicia Olatuja's performance entitled "Intuition: From the Minds of Women" celebrates the achievements of a long list of esteemed female composers. Material includes songs of Brenda Russell, Sade, Tracy Chapman, Kate Bush, Angela Bofill and Linda Creed, and offers a musical perspective unique to Olatuja. Praised by the New York Times as “a singer with a strong and luscious tone and an amiably regal presence on stage”, Alicia Olatuja has been astounding audiences with her exquisite vocals, artistic versatility and captivating demeanor. She first came into the national spotlight in 2013, whilst performing as the featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Barack Obama’s Second Inauguration. Shortly thereafter, she assembled her own jazz based ensemble and recorded her first solo album, Timeless (2014). Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Alicia grew up immersed in a wide range of musical styles, including gospel, soul, jazz and classical. These influences have informed her artistic journey and she later graduated with a Masters degree in Classical Voice/Opera from the Manhattan School of Music. After appearing in numerous operatic and musical theater productions she started to perform more regularly in gospel and jazz concerts and worked with such esteemed artists as Chaka Khan, BeBe Winans and Christian McBride.

Joining the quartet this weekend will be New York City trumpeter Joe Magnarelli. Over the course of a 40+ year career, Joe Magnarelli has emerged as one of the premier trumpeters, improvisers, composers, and educators in jazz.
  • New York Festival of Song (NYFOS) continues its 2021-22 Mainstage Series with “Buenos Aires, Then and Now”. The concert features soprano Nicoletta Berry, bass-baritone Federico De Michelis, soprano Raquel González, and others artists to be announced with pianist Shawn Chang and NYFOS Artistic Director Steven Blier serving as pianists and hosts. The program honors the diverse musical culture of Buenos Aires and includes the works of its iconic masters, such as Guastavino, Ginastera, López Buchardo, Carlos Gardel, and Piazzolla, as well as its contemporary voices, Esteban Benzecry and Ezequiel Viñao. “Buenos Aires, Then and Now” is being produced with the collaboration of Jorge Parodi and Opera Hispánica.   • Bert Williams (1874-1922) was one of the pre-eminent entertainers of the Vaudeville era, and one of the most popular comedians for all audiences of his time. In an age when racial inequality and stereotyping were commonplace, he became the first Black-American to take pioneer leading roles, both on Broadway and in the 1914 film Darktown Jubilee, pushing back racial barriers in his 3-decades long career. Tony-nominated actor Larry Marshall who starred in "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Hair", and "Porgy & Bess” rejuvenates the life and music of Bert Williams on stage.
  • Award-winning Broadway veteran Tina Fabrique (Ragtime, Bring in da’ Noise, Bring in da’ Funk, The Wiz, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Gospel at Colonus), pays homage to Gospel - spiritual music that was, and still is a staple of African-American life. Rooted in the solo and responsive church singing of the African-American South, Gospel originated from both Black and White musics of the 19th century; Black spirituals, slave songs, and white hymnody, emerging at the same time as ragtime, blues and jazz.
