    The purpose of each concert is not only to share the music of women composers with the community, but also to share the artistic process and methods practiced by these composers. It's also a forum through which the audience can have a meaningful dialogue with the musicians and hopefully feel more of a connection with the music and the artistic process moving forward.

    Join us in celebrating acclaimed vocalist Tony Middleton’s 88th Birthday on Saturday, June 25. He’s supported by pianist Tadataka Unno, bassist Jim Cammack, and drummer Dwayne “Cook” Broadnax.

    Tony has been aptly described as having a rare ability and a vocal talent unsurpassed. His career has included record recording, Broadway, commercials, television, and the cabaret circuit here and abroad. He lived and performed in Paris and Europe on the jazz circuit for a number of years and gets called back time and again.

    Tony started his career as the lead singer of the Willows, having composed his hit recording of Church Bells May Ring, and is still in demand to sing with the Willows at Doo Wop concerts and has done several PBS Doo Wop shows.

    Tony has performed the music of Burt Bacharach, whose recording Don’t Ever Leave Me received a Grammy Award nomination. He has performed for Quincy Jones and Cy Coleman with their music. Having appeared at the Apollo along with Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Big Mabel and Slappy White, he has also sung with Cissy Houston, Nell Carter, and Della Reese.

    Tony was the lead in “Cabin in the Sky” and one of the featured singers in the Broadway show Purlie. He performed in concert at the City Center with the Alvin Ailey Dancers in which he sang the “Mary Lou Williams’s Mass”, and was one of the headliners at Lincoln Center at the 55th Birthday Tribute to the late Charlie Parker.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, he currently divides his time between teaching in N.Y. and performing with world renowned jazz artists at home and abroad. Berkman has performed with numerous jazz luminaries including: Sonny Stitt, Tom Harrell, Brian Blade, the Vanguard Orchestra, Cecil McBee, Dave Douglas and Chris Potter. His 11 recordings as a leader have appeared on numerous “Critic’s Best” lists. Berkman is a tenured professor at the Aaron Copland School of Music, C.U.N.Y. in New York and has published three books on jazz with Sher Music Publishing which are used in jazz schools worldwide.
