TargetMargin@7: Nov 4
In November, the International Contemporary Ensemble is back at Target Margin with a new installation by Nathan Davis, which explores geologic time with ready-to-use building materials, collaborations with Nicholas Houfek’s ColorSynth, Phyllis Chen’s Tone Grove, and more! On November 4th, take a journey through different visual and sonic representations of textiles, panels, and frames. As Nathan Davis explores geologic time with ready-to-use building materials in his sound design for an upcoming collaborative architectural installation, Planetary Home Improvement, Marianthi Papalexandri’s Duo for Motor and Sound Panels brings audiences through a dynamic spatialization where the performer functions as a mechanism, like clockwork. Phyllis Chen’s Tone Grove translates Anni Albers’ weaving patterns into custom-built drum sequences, creating sounds from hand-cranked music boxes, bamboo, rice, bowls, and hands. Physical, tactile experiences become central to these works. FREE with RSVP. In-person and livestream options available. TargetMargin@7: Nov 5
In November, the International Contemporary Ensemble is back at Target Margin with a new installation by Nathan Davis, which explores geologic time with ready-to-use building materials, collaborations with Nicholas Houfek’s ColorSynth, Phyllis Chen’s Tone Grove, and more! On November 5th, experience a showcase of Ensemble members’ work with Nicholas Houfek’s ColorSynth, featuring improvisations, compositions, and more synthesizers! The WBGO story: Bright Moments from Newark to the World
Join us at Bethany Baptist Church for a screening of this award-winning documentary film about the founding of Newark’s jazz radio station, WBGO. Directed by Chris Daniel, The WBGO Story is an incredible true story of passion and perseverance told by the people who were there at the start more than 40 years ago—including WBGO Founder Bob Ottenhoff and Newark’s First Lady of Jazz Mrs. Dorthaan Kirk. With hard work, faith, determination and talent, WBGO grew from a local labor of love into a worldwide beacon of jazz. A must-see for any music fan.
Facemasks and proof of vaccination are required for entry.
Presented by NJPAC and WBGO
Empire Wild Holiday Concert
Empire Wild blew audiences away with their Morris Museum debut on The Back Deck this past June, now they return inside the Bickford Theatre for a holiday concert that puts a fresh twist on familiar favorites. They are a genre-bending, crossover trio founded by Ken Kubota, Brandon Ilaw, and Mitch Lyon. Ken and Mitch bring all the cello has to offer – bowed, plucked, chopped and more. Brandon can be found singing and playing anything he can get his hands on – often a cajon, sometimes a guitar or piano, maybe some ankle bells. All classically trained, the three musicians met at Juilliard and formed Empire Wild as a vehicle for their love of musical exploration – fusing the sounds of pop, folk, Broadway and more into their songwriting and composition.
