On this edition of WBGO Journal, host Doug Doyle speaks to artists and educators who are making a difference in their respective fields….

We’ll hear from Steven Melendez who is the new Artistic Director of the New York Theatre Ballet. Melendez starting dancing ballet after NYTB’s founder Diana Byer came into a Bronx homeless shelter looking to give youngsters an opportunity. Steven was with his mom and was 7 years old at that time.

Doyle also chats with pianist, composer, saxophonist and educator Adegoke Steve Colson and his wife, musical partner and singer Iqua Colson. Their special performance at the Harlem School of the Arts is coming up on June 11 at 7:30pm. Ade is the 2021 recipient of the South Arts Jazz Road Creative Residencies Grant, which is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Through the funding of that grant, Colson has been leading Afternoon Jazz @ HSA master classes involving students and musicians.

Doug Doyle has been News Director at WBGO since 1998 and has taken his department to new heights in coverage and recognition. Doug and his staff have received more than 250 awards from organizations like PRNDI (now PMJA), AP, New York Association of Black Journalists, Garden State Association of Black Journalists and the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists.
