China Moses: "It's complicated"

Ways To Subscribe
Alexandre Lacombe

China Moses is a multi-hyphenate: singer, actress, radio and television personality. She’s the daughter of legendary jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater and director Gilbert Moses. She carries a deep sense of her American roots (she was born in Los Angeles), but her life was shaped in Paris, where grew up and has spent much of her career.

China’s sound, which draws from a wide variety of inspirations within the lineage of Black American Music, can also be hard to categorize. In other words, when it comes to summing up China Moses, it’s complicated.

So it should come as little surprise that she titled her latest album It’s Complicated. It’s her seventh solo album, it’s being released independently, and notably it’s not available on streaming platforms. So it might be a little more complicated than usual to find it.

China Moses spoke recently with WBGO’s Kyla Marshell and explained the idea behind the name of her album - a title that seems to reflect both the music and her lived experience.

Kyla Marshell is a writer whose essays, poems, interviews and criticism have appeared in The Guardian, The Believer, Kinfolk, Gawker, BuzzFeed, O, the Oprah Magazine, The Ringer, The New York City Jazz Record and elsewhere. She has earned Jacob K. Javits, Cave Canem, UCROSS and MacDowell fellowships; Ebony.com named her one of "7 Young Black Writers You Should Know.
