Newark’s own Wayne Shorter would have turned 91 this Sunday. WBGO is celebrating the legendary saxophonist and composer all week long.
Earlier this year, NYU’s Steinhardt’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions along with the longtime director of jazz studies at NYU, Dave Pietro, came to the WBGO Studios as part of Jazz Appreciation Month.
Since the fall of 2008, Pietro and the NYU Wayne Shorter Ensenmble have performed more than 130 compositions by NYU alumnus Wayne Shorter, class of 1956, from his early works with Art Blakey and the Blue Note label through his work with Miles Davis, Weather Report and his later recordings on the Columbia and Verve labels.
In this episode of The Art of the Story, members of this year’s Wayne Shorter Ensemble expressed their love of Shorter’s music and performing in the WBGO Studios.
