Emily Springer
Emily Springer was raised in Montclair, New Jersey, and has been a lifelong music lover. Growing up in a multicultural home with Puerto Rican, Chinese, and Black American influence, music of all genres was constant in her household.
She is currently a reporter for WBGO News, where she covers stories about the arts, culture, and exciting musical happenings in New York and New Jersey.
Outside of WBGO, Emily is deeply invested in writing, jazz, history, and investigating Black American culture’s impact on our society. She has directed her passion into guest programming at WKCR 89.9 FM, curating musical performances and leading panels. Emily also uses her talent for storytelling to write a blog on substack featuring memoirs, music, and culture pieces that are all born from her inherent curiosity.
Emily is a graduate of Hunter College and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2023; she received her B.A. in Africana, Puerto Rican, and Latino Studies, as well as a certificate in arts management. As an undergraduate, she researched jazz and the politics of respectability through a Mellon Public Humanities fellowship, combining her interests in music and academia. While at Hunter, she was an active member of Hunter College Radio, WHCS, as a Disc-Jocky, hosting weekly programs featuring an eclectic selection of music for her listeners.
