NYS lawmaker pushes for outdoor drinking during World Cup

Threads

A state lawmaker wants to let New York bars and restaurants serve beer and other drinks outdoors during the World Cup. Some in the hospitality industry question whether it’s too late to make it happen with the World Cup just three months away. Assemblymember Tony Simone, a Manhattan Democrat, introduced a bill that would allow New York City and other municipalities to set up “entertainment zones.” People would be able to buy drinks from businesses with liquor licenses and drink on the street within those zones.
But time is not on his side. The state Legislature and Governor Hochul still have to approve the bill, and municipalities and the State Liquor Authority would have to sign off on any “entertainment zone” plans.
