Mamdani stresses help to homeless and disabled after blizzard

RTE

As the entire metro area digs out from the blizzard, Mayor Mamdani continues to update everyone on the situation in New York City. He emphasized the help being given to the homeless after a number of those who sleep in the streets died during the January storm.

“Code blue remains in effect. An enhanced code blue has been extended through Wednesday morning,” the mayor said. “Throughout this storm our outreach workers have continually canvassed all five boroughs helping homeless New Yorkers find shelter.”

Mamdani said the city has been getting the homeless off the streets, running warming buses as well as warming spaces in schools and hospitals.

The mayor says this is a time to look out for each other. “I continue to ask New Yorkers to check in on those who may be struggling. If you see someone in need of warmth or shelter please call 311 immediately so outreach workers can assist,” he said. “In a code blue these 311 calls will be rerouted to 911.”

Mamdani says everyone has their part to play in cleaning up after the storm.

“Our mandate for property owners to clear four-foot wide paths across all sidewalks remains in effect,” he said. “We issued more than 4000 violations after the last storm. We do not want to issue as many citations again. So please, if you are a property owner, do your part, clear the snow.”
