The extreme cold stretch is not yet over for New York City and so far Mayor Zohran Mamdani says 16 people have been found dead outside since the cold started a week and a half ago. Mamdani says hypothermia appears to have been a factor in 13 of the deaths while three others are overdose related. Mamdani says outreach teams continue to try and get the homeless into warm shelters.
"Since the start of this emergency period, we have successfully made more than 860 placements into shelters and safe havens during what could end up becoming the longest period of consecutive sub-32 degree weather in our city's history,"
Mamdani is urging New Yorkers to call 3-11 should they see a New Yorker in need of warmth.
