Fewer people are losing their lives on New York City streets.
Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets released data showing the city had 206 deaths on its roads last year. That's 46 fewer deaths than the prior year and tied for 2018 for the lowest number of traffic deaths in the city's history. Street safety advocates point to numerous street and intersection safety improvements made under former Mayor Eric Adams as the reason for the big drop in street deaths. They would like to see more of that under Mayor Mamdani.
