NYC has new parks commissioner

NYC Parks Department

New York City has a new parks commissioner.

Over the weekend, Mayor Mamdani named Tricia Shimamura as parks commissioner. Shimamura has a had a number of previous public positions including Manhattan borough commissioner for the Parks Department.

"I will work to ensure that our parks are not just free, but that they are engaging spaces that New Yorkers can be proud of. We will hold every park to the same level of significance as we would our own backyard."

The City's Parks Department oversees more than 30,000 acres of land, nearly 14 percent of New York City.
