New York City Mayor elect Zohran Mamdani is getting ready to lead New York City and now has chosen a fire commissioner.
Mamdani has brought Lillian Bonsignore out of retirement to head the 17 thousand member FDNY. The Bronx native was at one point the chief of EMS, was on the front lines during the pandemic and spent more than three decades with fire department.
"This appointment represents a significant responsibility, one I accept with humility, dedication and a deep sense of commitment to the city and its people."
Bonsignore is the first openly gay person to lead the department. She'll face challenges that include pay parity for EMS and improving response times.
