New York has a new law to protect veterans from fraud.
Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Guard VA Benefits Act on Thursday. It puts more safeguards in place to protect veterans from fraud, pension poaching and benefit theft by unaccredited representatives. Assemblyman Steven Stern is the Chair of Veterans Affairs Committee.
"For Far too long, criminally minded posers, calling themselves experts or advisors or consultants charge outrageous fees."
Under the new law, anyone who attempts to defraud a veteran can face a misdemeanor and 10-thousand dollars in penalties. The law also creates a veterans' services fund for the penalty money.
