City Councilmembers are rejecting a bill that would ban horse drawn carriages, but the measure could be taken up again under the incoming Mamdani Administration.
The Health Committee voted against what's called Ryder's Law on Friday. It would have done away with the horse carriage industry in and around Central Park. Councilman Jim Gennaro voted no.
"The industry has been in existence for 150 years and not one conviction of animal cruelty."
horse carriage drivers were relieved while animal rights advocates say they will continue to fight to end horse drawn carriages. That fight is expected to continue into the next administration because Mayor elect Zohran Mamdani is in favor of axing the industry but he wants to help horse carriage drivers find other jobs.
