United Air Lines planes line up along the busy Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey, on the eve of Thanksgiving on November 23, 2022.

Starting today, the major local airports are going to see further disruptions because of a reduction in flights tied to the government shutdown.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says flights will be reduced by ten percent at 40 airports nationwide. The list includes JFK, LaGuardia, Newark and Teterboro.

"I anticipate there will be additional disruptions. There will be frustration. We are working with the airlines. They are going to work with passengers. But in the end our sole role is to keep this airspace as safe as possible."

He says the reduction in flights is necessary because the agency is short two thousand air traffic controllers nationwide and the controllers are dealing with fatigue and stress and are not getting paid during the shutdown.
