Adams approves money for hiring of 5K officers

Outgoing New York City Mayor Eric Adams is setting aside money to hire more police officers.

Mayor Adams is approving 300-million dollars to hire five thousand more police officers over the next three years. That would bring the department to about 40 thousand officers by July of 2028, its highest total in a couple decades.

“The vast majority of New Yorkers want more police officers on their streets and in their subways, and that is what we are delivering by adding these 5,000 new officers."

However, the hiring would not start until next year, meaning the next mayor could simply axe the plan. Both mayoral candidates Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa have been campaigning to hire more officers while frontrunner Zohran Mamdani wants to keep the current head count.
