The MTA is approving a fare hike that's set to go into effect next year. They made it official at their Tuesday board meeting.
Subway and bus riders will fork over 3 dollars for a one trip ticket, up from two dollars and 90 cents. Those using the LIRR and Metro North will see on average a nearly four and a half percent increase. MTA bridges and tunnels are going up seven and a half percent. Board Member Melva Miller says she struggled with the decision but voted yes.
"Approving this increase is fiscally responsible thing to do and ultimately necessary to ensure the long term health of the MTA."
Some riders blasted the MTA board for the increase, calling it unaffordable. MTA officials say it's much needed to keep up with operating costs.
