New York City crime continues to drop.
Fresh stats from the NYPD show overall index crime down 6.7 percent in August compared to August of last year. That includes a 22 percent drop in transit crime, and a drop in assaults, robberies and retail theft. However, murders were up 33 percent in August. Shootings are at an all time low for the first 8 months of the year. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says the focus has been on taking illegal guns off the streets and arresting violent gang members.
