There's massive changes coming to part of Midtown Manhattan. On Thursday the city council passed rezoning legislation, allowing for thousands of housing units.
What's called the Midtown South Mixed Used Plan will allow for 10 thousand housing unites in Midtown south, 28 hundred of those will be affordable. Dan Garodnick is the head of the Department of City Planning.
"The largest neighborhood rezoning in decades. It's the first time we are using new high density zoning districts that will allow even more housing."
The plan also includes a 34th Street car-free busway, a car-free corridor on part of Broadway and critical investments for nearby schools. The plan also includes investments in the fashion and garment industry. Councilman Erik Bottcher is a big advocate of the plan.
“At the same time, we’re protecting good-paying jobs, preserving the heart of our fashion industry, and reimagining Midtown South as a place where more families can live, thrive, and build lasting community.”
