Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is officially running for mayor of New York City as an independent.
Cuomo was set to appear as independent on the ballot in November following his Democratic primary loss to Zohran Mamdani. But on Monday, he formally announced he'll be campaigning to try and beat Mamdani in the general election. In the announcement video, he thanked those who voted for him in the primary and apologized for letting them down.
"My opponent, Mr. Mamdani offers slick slogans but no real solutions. We need a city with lower rent, safer streets, where buying your first home is possible."
Cuomo is behind in the polls to Mamdani. Independents Mayor Adams and Jim Walden and Republican Curtis Sliwa are polling lower and have shown no signs of dropping out of the mayor's race.
