Several former high ranking NYPD officials are accusing a former police commissioner of selling promotions in newly filed lawsuits.
Former NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig and three other chiefs or assistant chiefs allege corruption among the higher ranks and that former Police Commissioner Edward Caban would sell promotions up to 15-thousand dollars in several lawsuits. Essig says he was forced out in 2023 after challenging promotion practices. A spokesperson for Mayor Adams says the administration is reviewing the suits. Lawyers for Caban tell the New York Post the suits include,
“unsupported and reckless suggestion that Caban accepted anything of value in connection with promotions,”
The new lawsuits also claim the department falsified timecards and didn't follow body camara rules.
