It’s been three years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade. Representative Mikie Sherrill, who’s running for governor of New Jersey, used the occasion to hold an online discussion about how things have changed for women in that time. One of her guests was EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler.
“Republicans are not going to stop, they are not going to quit until abortion is banned everywhere, all over this country,” she said, “and so anyone who feels that because they live in a certain state that they are safe, that is absolutely not true and we are seeing it every day.”
EMILYs List is a political action committee that aims to elect Democratic female candidates who favor abortion rights.
Sherrill said she hopes people will take note of what is happening in states where abortion has been outlawed or severely restricted.
“Looking at other states like Texas and Florida where women are dying on the emergency room table, having miscarriages because the doctors feel that they are not able to perform emergency abortions, I hope that as people take into account what this actually means in practice they can be more supportive of my position on this,” she said.
Sherrill stressed the vast differences between her and her opponent on the issue of abortion.
“We already know that Jack Ciattarelli has said that he has an agenda to undermine abortion protections and that he also has an agenda to appoint far right judges to the bench,” she said. “Those are two really toxic things for women.”
Sherrill said if she wins she will appoint judges who will defend women’s right to choose.
