Voters head to polls Tuesday in primary election

New York State Board of Elections

Tuesday is Primary Election Day in New York. The center of attention will be on the Democrats running for mayor.

Voters will be choosing among 11 Democrats. The most known ones are former Governor Andrew Cuomo, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Comptroller Brad Lander. Voters can rank candidates one through five as part of the ranked choice voting system. Political Science Professor Dan Cassino expects low voter turnout.

"The people who are going to be voting, are the people who are the most engaged people who are paying the most attention and that tends to favor the candidates who are on the extremes of the ideological spectrum."

He says that would favor Cuomo and Mamdani. Mayor Eric Adams is sitting out. He's running for re-election as an independent.
