Schumer calls for tour helicopter surprise inspections

AP

More pieces from a helicopter in last week's deadly crash in the Hudson River are being recovered.

Officials say the main rotor and part of the roof structure have been pulled out of the Hudson River on Monday. The rotor could be a key piece to the NTSB figuring out what caused the chopper to fall apart mid-air before it plunged into the Hudson by Hoboken, killing six people. Meanwhile, New York Senator Chuck Schumer is calling on the FAA to conduct surprise inspections on all New York City tour helicopter companies.

"It is usually the companies, not the pilots that are openly manipulating FAA rules, cutting corners and could well be putting profits over people."

The tour company that operated the helicopter that went down last week is called New York Helicopter Tours and has shutdown operations.
