New York City officials will start issuing fines Tuesday to residents and landlords who are not obeying rules for the new composting program.
The Department of Sanitation is now authorized to issue 25 dollar fines for first offense for those not separating food waste, yard waste and food-soiled paper from regular trash. They should be set out inside labeled bins. This is for the city's new composting program that became mandatory last October. The program is an effort to reduce the city's garbage. A list of food separation rules can be found on the city's website.
